Hi to all

Can you lot help me? I bet you can, here goes

I have a budget of approx £5000 to spend on a car. I was looking at Subura WRX's, Ford Cougar V6, but I have seen and fallen for the 300zx. Now will 5k get a reliable car, is the twin turbo a lot dearer to run and what sort of running costs (servicing, MPG, spares prices etc) should i expect.

Thanks for any helpful comments

MPG: Anything from 16mph, for short round town trips to 32 on long motorway trips taking it easy. Driving about 80mph will get you about 25mpg.

Service costs: Change the oil and oil filter every 3000 miles. Tyres every year (Depends on how hard you drive) will cost you £100 each for good stock sized ones. Parts are very expensive, but there are places where you can get used parts for a fraction of the cost of a new one. There are places which can save you a few quid on the new parts too. Importing from the US also helps save on some parts. The worst that can happen is your engine blowing which will cost you over £1000 to mend, blown turbos will probably cost about the same depending on what turbos you get, reconditioned ones or new. There is a general trend when you buy one of these cars, if it brakes put a better one on.

£5,000 should get you a desent one now that the prices have come down, but there are more dogs out there than good ones, so be very carful what you buy. Try take some one who knows the car with you when you go to look.

Where about are you from?

£5k should find a good one but look hard, be careful at some dealer/ importers. Buy private you are likeley to save money, but look carefully.

MPG can be as low as 11 on short cold runs but as good as nearly 30 on a nice steady run.

Servicing wise after owning mine a year I worked out the cost of keeping mine on the road (excluding tax insurance petrol etc) and ive had nothing major go wrong like turbos or serious engine stuff(touch wood!!) and its cost me more or less dead on a grand to for maintinence, so at £20 a week I cant complain!!

One thing that helps service wise is that the plugs last 60k so you only need to do oil and filters on a regular basis, oil probably every 3 to 4k miles filters every other oil change.

With zeds if you look after them they generally look after you, dont maintain them and theyll empty your wallet!!!

If you're looking to use the car daily, I would go for a non turbo, more mpg, much cheaper to run in the long term, no turbo's to replace, no hicas to screw up etc... and still looks great! (but you'll not be able to give any "proper" cars a run for their money.

Get one!

Value for money they take some beating, i have a WRX at the mo and do have some fun in it but for power, comfort, headturning and smile factor the Z takes it. (nearly as good as the Skyline):D

Had a similar sort of choice myself what made me go for the zed was the problems early WRX had with the bottom ends..... lots of them have gone wrong and a new bottom end is 3 grand.......they sorted it on later models but you wont get one of them for 5 grand.........also there was a considerable difference in insurance........WRX was about 150 quid more.

Since ive had the Zed im more than happy with the performance and it turns more heads than a WRX would.

I am not "trying" to sell mine but would if I was made an offer.

1993 series 2 jap TT auto 52000miles 17'' split rims, exhust, UK clocks, black, etc etc.

Very Nice and it has never done a single thing wrong.

Every time I think of selling it I drive it and change my mind. Imported it myself.

Get one!!!

I had a Mkiii Supra for about 5 years which was a good car and I found it hard to replace. Nothing under £10K compared to it...........until I got my Zed:D

The Zed is a fantastic car, faster than most things on the road with ferrari/lambo good looks to boot.

You'll not be disapointed:cool:

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

nice choice

i had 300tt fot about a year

sold it bought a wrx(thought it would be more practicale)

regreted it from the min i handid keys over

5 months later bought a 300zxtt

and i wont be without one.;) ;)

I've had my Zed for nearly 3 yars now. Great car, rewarding to mod etc. But go for a turbo, for if you get a n/a after getting used to its power you'll regret you didn't get a turbo!

Wish you luck in finding a good one.

Geoff.

Turbo!

If you are experienced in buying used cars then look

for the usual things.

eg. don't answer mobile phone only ads, don't meet in

pub car park etc., panel lines off and so forth.

Service history is important and you will be taking a risk

to buy without one. Look for cam belt change - unless

you are very lucky and find a low mileage car.

Have you had a go in one?

Just to add to the good advice already given, try and buy one from this forum. Owners on this forum tend to go to the same places for work/servicing, so the people who work on them have a good history on those vehicles. So they can be a good source of info on previous servicing.

Also, only buy one with a good amount of history, otherwise you're asking for trouble.

I bought mine in February and I have never loved a car as much as this one.

A word of warning though, once youve bought one, the urge to start modifying will set in. Dont try and fight it. Resistence is futile ;)

Where has he gone?

Is he still reading this? He's not posted since.

yeh i still here thanks for all the tips

I'm in Bromley Kent

I've had a insurance quote a quite reasonably £550 full comp from my current company although they dont take alarms into consideration so i hope i can get a better quote when i actually get one.

Why is an import more expensive to insure? Ain't it the same car? I just don't get how insurance companys work this out.

We have had a major water leak in my house and her who must be obeyed has said i cant buy one untill i have finished that so i better get on with it.

P.S. Does anyone know anything about a black TT auto reg no. G69 CLH for sale locally 83,000 miles PX to clear sounds sweet but got to be a catch at £2,650 what do the experts (thats you lot) think.

Cheers lads

Steve  I love this nana

imports are different

bumpers etc

my uk i a lot cheaper to insure than the import

i used to have.

that carsounds very cheap b wear

tou get what you pay for.

steve

Try Direct Line for insurance.

'Caveat Emptor' but if that car is from a dealer then you

will have some legal protection.

Service history?

Find out name/s of previous owner/s and contact them.

Uk manual tt (red) best......
