Private Plates

I know quite a few of you have private number plates...

Any chance you could give me some guidance?

I would like to know what you need to do once you buy a plate.

I think it goes something like this...

1. Buy plate

2. Pay DVLA to transfer plate from holding onto car.

3. Get DVLA to stamp on MOT new registration number.

4. DVLA re-issue tax disc (upon recieving old disc) onto new number.

Cheers

Ben

Buying the entitlement is easy, find the reg you want pay them the money and you will get sent a retention document for the plate, this has to be sent to dvla with your log book and MOT where they will do the change , depending on if the assignment fee is paid or not it may cost you £80 to do this, and it will cost you £80 every time you swap it onto another car!)

Now a tricky bit is getting the plate made, due to the new laws on making reg plates you cannot get them made up until you have recieved your log book back, also youll need photographic id for the person whos name and address is on the log book, and the addresses must match.

DVLA will send you a new tax (and will ask you to send your old one back) disc but you cant display the plates till you get the logbook back, but then thats impossible because you cant get them till you get the logbook back

Got mine from the DVLA web site ( price includes assignment fee).Once it turned up in the post i took it to the local DVLA office with my docs. The motor wasnt in my name at that time so they sent the log book off for me, reissued the tax and filled out a form for me to take which authorised me to get number plates made(dont forget to take id with you when you go to get the plates made).

Oh yeah...tell your insurance company

As Alfie said, if you buy direct from DVLA (either on line or by phone) the cost includes the £80 assignemnt fee.

You can get the plates made up at Halfords using the retention doc (if it is in your name) instead of waiting for a log book - it still proves your entitlement to the number.

Just go into your nearest vehicle registration office with the retention cert, current log book and MOT cert and they will do the assigment there and then.

They give you a new tax disc and you can either hand them your old one or post it later.

Done this loads of times - had my plate for 8 years and several cars.................

(Latest one in June this year, so I know above info is up to date)

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

You can order some real fancy plates on the web from http://www.fancyplates.com/ and http://www.gtgrafix.com/ I ordered sets from both these companies in April without having to show any paperwork etc. ;)

Yeh, I just did it the other week. The DVLA local office give you a a letter of authorisation to get the plates made up.

But you'll need to search around for a place that make up the plates if you've got an import as the rear is not usual stock.

Er, but these are not street legal Grant and I think you'll find that the maximum penalty for displaying such plates on a road car is a whopping 12 months in PRISON!

Good luck dude!
