Wasn't that just about No More Chat Rooms, rather than No More MSN?

(fingers crossed)

Yes I think you're right Neet, just looked up a bit more about it, seems like its chat rooms only.

I heard that MSN was going to go as well. Could be more detail here :- http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/3133192.stm Not had time to read it myself yet.

However, we could consider setting up our own private one if MSN does go off line. I think this would bring the 'club' togther more and I know that quite a few people on here are MSN regulars. What does y'all think ? (members only of course)

MSN CHATROOMS AXED

Computer giant Microsoft is to close the majority of its internet chatrooms to stop paedophiles preying on children.

It will axe all its chatrooms run by its MSN websites in 34 countries in a bid to prevent paedophiles using the web to groom victims.

Other chatrooms accessible using MSN will be more tightly monitored or operate on a subsciption-only basis.

It comes after a recent survey of 9 to 16-year-olds that 20% are regular users of internet chatrooms, 25% have requested a meeting with someone they have met in a chatroom and 10% admit they have actually gone on to meet up with a stranger.

The company also hopes the move will combat spam emails.

Companies are known to collect email addresses from those visiting chatrooms which they use to send what are often x-rated adverts.

Matt Whittingham, head of customer satisfaction at MSN UK, said: "Most people treat this type of service with respect but we have found that chatrooms - and not only ours - are increasingly being used for inappropriate communications.

"Many of those using chatrooms are young and interested in sex and going out.

"Unfortunately we know paedophiles have exploited this and the freedom they get from chatrooms to target children.

"We have had enough of our services being used in this way which is why we have decided to close those which are free and not monitored."

MSN will shut its free, unmoderated Chat services around the globe on October 14.

A service will continue for free in New Zealand, Australia, Brazil, Canada and Japan but the contents of the chatrooms will be monitored.

The US will run a subscription-only service which requires users to disclose their credit card details.

I really doubt they will get rid of messenger, as messenger is more of an invertational conversation not a talk to any one. Also it is a lot easier to track down people on messenger as they use a email address as their log in, which can be traced and a MSN passport which again is tracable.

Stuart

Microsoft spokeswoman went on News24 to say that MS Messenger will NOT be axed as its 'safe'.

Just the unmoderated chatrooms are going.

Now What is ChrisC gona do?

LMFAO :D

At least the world is now safe from Mac attacks LOL

Hmmm. Is Microsoft's claim of safe the same as their claims of secure software?

we can run our own network when the server gets back,

it may stop the random invitings to mass conversations :) the software is more stable as well.

who actually beleives that they are pulling the chat roms because of perverts & spam? have you noticed that they will only be binning the ones that are free of charge, not the ones they make money from.

this is probably a cost-cutting excercise that has been covered up with a nice bit of "spin" to make the world think that microsoft are looking out for us!

cynical, moi?

The only chat service available to MSN users in the UK will be the free instant messaging service, MSN Messenger, which is not so open and gives people more control over who they talk to.
