How good are they???

What is the difference between the manual and auto...?

Let's not have a slanging match but constrictive critism...

Cheers

Hi Ben

Generaly I think the auto box on the Z is very good if you're going to run the car in standard trim. If it's a J spec then a must is a seperate oil cooler for the box. If you go after big power gains then the box will fail eventually unless you upgrade it. I believe SE do a very good upgrade for the box.

The manual box seems to be quite strong although some on here have had problems.

Power outputs for the auto/manual is different, 280bhp for the auto and 300bhp for the manual I believe. Having said that the autos have better torque due to running different cams and i'm not sure if the turbos are slightly different as well. Quite a few people who have done a conversion from auto to manual report that it feels quicker than a genuine manual.

At the end of the day it's down to personal choice. There's nothing wrong with the auto if you do the cooler mod, despite the horror stories you here.

Do what I've done and have one of each :p :p All be it temporarily.

Cheers

one main difference is that the auto changes gears by itself wheras the manual will not, and therefore requires some user intervention to switch between the gears.

hope this helps :slap: :D :D :D

just kidding.

Oil cooler upgrade is highly recommended on Jap spec. but most important thing is change the transmission oil frequently on auto's

The turbos are smaller on an auto

J Spec - Have an oil cooler fitted.............

UK Spec - Have an oil cooler fitted...........

Auto's are for lazy people!! I know, I have one and have had two previously, the last one I had went pear shaped but it didn't have an aftermarket cooler on it, hence the short life and the 2k to have it put right!! (Keith S now reaping the the reward of this as he brought my old Z!)

Auto V's Manual debate will run and run and run and run and run and run......you get the picture...........

But it's whatever you want.......I love my Auto and I don't want a manual unless it a UK  2-Seater SWB Z..........but then I'd have found a source of rocking horse S**T, so no chance of that then!! :D

Both run good times, both are quick, and both are fitted in a Z......

It's a Z........it rocks.........

Matty.

Paul,

I have a Jap auto, is changing the transmission fluid a pain ? (no drain plug on imports)

Thanks

John

Funnily enough, mine does have a drain plug, but I don't think it should!!

You'll have to undo the oil pan, so as you'll have already gathered, it'll go everywhere and be a messy job!!

Fit a new gasket when you put the pan back

The best way to do this is under pressure as manually draining will leave quite a bit still in there. You can repeat the process a few times but nothing beats it being drained under line pressure.

Think there's a write up on Andy's site.
