Hi all!

I am changing front brake pads tomorrow.

I think I read if doing this it is best to change the shims as well!

Are they easy to get? Like tomorrow! And where from.

And whilst here, is the air con belt the same as the fan belt?doh!

Or do they just put that on it to lable it? Is this easy to do to. I would imagine its in the web manual can someone tell me the page please.

Shims should be OK unless some were lost or well rusty. You have a pair for each pad including a cut off one.

Not sure if replacements are easy to get

Look out for stuck or sticking pistons

And there are 3 drive belts!

Hi Willie O

Thanks for reply I have shims for tomorrow.

Yes I have the other 2 belts on the car. The one I ordered says fan belt & I ordered it for the air con ! Is it easy to do as it goes behind the alternator belt. Arthur

The belts are a bit of a PITA. They're all the same type - just different lengths. I think I used a 1010 (alternator) and a 965 and 925 for air con and power steering (can't remember which was which).

The Jap import has a shorter alternator belt than the UK though...

My brake shims have long since disappeared, I believe you get them included with the genuine Nissan brake pads though...(could be wrong)

Thanks Rob

Brake pads arrived from USA Strano parts, no shims.

Ordered shims from Nissan £20.

Dont you get the shims when you buy a set of Nissan pads?

The ones on my car where rusty when I last did a change. I just cleaned them with a wire brush and slapped copper grease all over it.

Cheers Rich!

do you think getting new ones a waste of time. If I clean the old shims & copper grease um? Think it makes sence really!

If me pads are worn would that cause my brakes to judder as this has just started to do. Worse at higher speed no judder from below 20mph. Or are my discs in need of changing?

  • Author

So do they just warp! is this a norm for a Z. Never ever had a warped disc on any other car. Never had a Z before though!

This could be more work! Want to take car to Germany on the 1st Oct. New engine sounds sweet though!

When you say judder, do you mean the steering wheel tries to shake your watch off your arm?

Now when questioning patients we like them to be specific!

Ive thought about this Andy and I think No! not that bad but, could be yes!

I think at 5 when finish work I will take Z out and give you a firmative. Thanks. Arthur.

Maybe your bushes need replacing.

Polyurethane lovely.

The interactive manual under FAQ's at the top of the forum is very handy!

If you are getting brake judder after you've changed the pads I'd look at changing the front tension rod bushes to poly ones as has been mentioned.

I replaced a set of disks a couple of years ago and it made no difference. Cost a fortune too.

Poly bushes are only about £45 and will tighten up the steering as a bonus so I'd get them done first mate.

You can get them from Z Centre:
