I take it everyone uses their Z's as second cars then...

I can get insurance but to use everyday is going to cost me!!!

I don't really want to have 2 cars just for me... I need 2 normally.

One for the family (an estate that my wife uses) one for me...

Biggest problem is going to by the mileage I going to be doing.

I really like the thought of have a powerful car that I can enjoy the driving, but I don't want to be kicked in the b*lls for doing it...

Tell me your thoughts guys...

Ben.

P.S. Sorry I replied to an items for sale topic and thought it better to re-do it here... :)

I use mine every day, expect to do about 12K per year in it. Insured via a broker called A Plan, advertised in Jap Performance car magazine.

If I recall it cost about £650 fully comp, inc bus use, and spouse as named driver (26), mines an import, i'm 35 with full no claims, thought that wasn't too bad.

I know you can get classic insurance via some companies for about half the price, but very limited mileage normally and no business use.

Cheers Paul.

I calculated in my head the approx. mileage I thought id do and toted up just short of 20,000 miles...

Don't want to do that much if poss. might try to use my wifes car as often as poss.

Suppose i'll have to bite the bullet and ring around the companies in the back of the usual magazines.

Bit disappointed by my current insurers as they have always been competitive, but this year can't even get close to the elephant.co.uk price of approx. £829 (£150 excess).

Im 25 (4 years NCB) and my wife is 29.

Anymore tales of insurance quotes welcome.

Ben

Unless you really, really like spending lots

of money, the Z is NOT the motor for 20k miles/a.

Just thought, my local insurance broker (friend of mine) quoted me Norwich Union, this was within £50 of what I ended up with (not NU Direct mind, they're crap, you'll need to talk to a broker) but had to have cat 1 alarm (mine is cat2)

A Plan are very good on imports, (mine is) don't know about UK spec.

Their website is http://www.aplan.co.uk You'll need to find a number on their and ask to speak to their specialist grey import dept (I spoke to a really helpfull chap called Rob) assuming yours is an import that is!

(really should do some work now I suppose!!)

Simmo,

Not the twin turbo, no, but the N/A is less expensive to run, no worries about blowing up turbo's and nearly 30 to the gallon!!

But a bit slow on the Auto:D

Thanks for the info...

Simmo, does that mean I should not think about a performance car to do any sort of mileage in...?

Looking at the forum sort of put my mind at ease on mileage on a Z...

These are study cars and an easy motorway muncher... (no jokes of munching anything else please.. :) )

If anyone dis-agrees join the debate. Just don't tell me to by a boring old hatchback that's a 50mpg diesel...

I want to enjoy driving and not pay through the nose for the pleasure.

Servicing costs a side, including tyres and the usual wear and tear, a Z seems like a win-win proposal...

Tell me i'm wrong...

Speak soon

Ben

It does seem to me that most people who have most problems with the 300zx drive them very hard, I'm not saying that you should drive excessively slowly! but using the car as normal everyday transport is great, I do it. As long as you have the servicing done properly, and are a bit canny about who you use and where you buy spares, running costs should be on a par with say the cost of running a new mondeo etc assuming that was serviced and maintained by a franchised dealer.

Also, if you keep the car in very good order, and you didn't overpay for it in the first place, you should suffer vertually no depreciation on it at this stage.

On the other hand, if you buy parts from Nissan and let them service and maintain it, you'll spend literally thousands and probably have the car ruined into the bargain (and before anyone jumps out at me, I know there will be exceptions, and some Nissan dealers will be good ones).

Also, if you modify/tune the car to produce higher power output, and drive about red lining in each gear, no you should not use it everyday, or it will cost you a fortune!! (again I await the contradictions/flack!!)

And.... lastly, if you are unlucky enough to have bought a bad one, disregard all of the above, it'll send you bust anyway!!!

Too right Paul...

I think due to the large miles only being done on a motorway and it won't involve caining it :) that I should be okay....

I also think that as long as I stick to the 6 month service (oil change etc...) that all should be fine.

See every 6 months Jeff!!!!

Ben....

Hi,

I run my NA 300 as an everyday car - costs me about £725 (age 29, 4NCB) with keith michaels (broker - see yellow pages) - cheaper than Aplan this year for me...

I dont do a lot of milage - 6K a year but I would be wary of expecting 30mpg from the NA. From my experience there seems to be hardly any difference MPG wise with the NA /Turbo. That is from town driving mainly - dont go onto the motorway much and work is very close to me - I am almost a 300ZX hermit! ;)

I get poor MPG but then thats the price to pay for owning a nice sports car!

Hope some of the above helps..

Barry
