Ok,have looked at all the search results and still not sure on this,i have as most know been running with 80psi on No1(lookin at engine from front its farthest to rear on right,(or is that No 6 cant remember:rolleyes: )and have maybe knackerd valve in there!,i do a 30 mile trip to see b19rks ,no problems,on way back going a good stomp down A5,i had to back off quick then in my mirror see shite loads of blue to black smokewhile coasting down, car running well i put foot down to look again, same thing happens, smoke seemed to come from both sides, when got home it did smell of light oil burn, today went out for a run of 20 miles today and had same smoke now on acceleration and when it had cleared backed off and it came back, one minute its on the right, then the left, The exhaust note is what you would call fluttery on nearside(side with crap vave, low comp etc)like a very low miss fire, engine tickover ok and still at 800rpm,i know i should have got engine sorted a long time back but due to things out of my control i have had to use it all summer, and i have done a far few miles, its probably shagged now, just a little concerned as to it being the turbo,s as there 15 months old ,roughly,so should be ok i would off thought, any ideas people, cheers

IIRC the cylinder you said is No. 6 which is the last on the path of the coolant so i think the head gasket can go around this cylinder ( and possibly other things aswell)

have you checked the oil at all. i have heard of blue smoke being anti freeze from the water leaking through the gasket and getting burned in the chamber, but i couldnt explain the black smoke mate.

this is all a bit of guess work really mate (which im sure you dont really want to hear) but i hope its something less serious.

good luck mate!

mmmmmmmm, funny you should mention water in oil,i checked oil after not running it all week till friday, the cap had the smallest amount(and i mean minute)of grey substance mixed in with oil on underside of cap,i thought maybe this was down to me not using it and a bit of moisture building up,but around 5 weeks ago when it was realy hot, temp gauge went well high, outside temp was 37c and me aircon was on with me stuck in traffic for ages, and i had to top up with about 1.5 litres of water, have got new rad cap and aftermarket temp sender wired up now and no prombs, maybe its related but if it is head gasket why did it not start soon after overheating, could a knackerd oil ring cause same symptoms:confused:

i dont know but i reckon that 1.5 litres of water couldnt have been lost due to the head gasket as that much water being lost through it would probably show up as more than just a slight bit of grey stuff in the oil.

as for the piston ring, you wouldnt obviously have water in your oil from that, and i couldnt see why it would cause any of your other problems.

im sorry but i cant think of much more mate. the best thing i can think of is take the car to a mechanic and they can test whats in your smoke, if its head gasket they wiould probably detect antifreeze in the smoke.

sorry i cant be of any more help mate

goood luck!

Cheers Ed, will run it local for a day or so,see what happens as to wether it gets worse or stops or whatever,i am not to worried as to state of engine as i have another to go in now,so i should pull me finger out and get it done over the autum/winter, bit botherd about it being turbos or not more than anything,is it possible to test em when engine out,of just best to get em refurbed anyway,;)

Stop worrying tony, youve got a spare in the garden!!!

Can i raise a smoke question aswell, mine had sat for a few days then had a bit of a run when i stopped i noticed a little bit of blue oil smoke comming from both exhausts i gave it a quick rev and got more smoke, then it cleared and hasnt done it since:confused:

Checked oil, water etc, all ok no contamination, all levels aok.

Any ideas? Or should i shut up and stop worrying like tony!!!;)

tony, good thing you've got the other engine, atleast that takes some of the stress away.:D are you having much done to it before it goes in?

i think turbos are a bit of a hard thing to diagnose going wrong. one of mine has blown, and its pretty obvious as theres loads of blue smoke, a bearing seems to have fallen to bits and the noise just gives it away. however my mates mkIII supra had a turbo on the way out, and the symptoms were completely different. he would get smoke on start up which would then go, but if you revved it you'd get loads and loads of smoke as you took your foot off the gas. however there was no noise from the turbo and it boosted fine.

untill you can get a mechanic to check it i would just not drive too much, take it easy when you do (although this is very hard i know:D ) and maybe check the hard pipes too, to make sure there's no bits of metal or anything in there to indicate the turbos are falling apart.

id probably be inclined to get the turbos reconditioned aslong as its not too much as its a lot of work getting to them if thy went wrong in the future.

good luck!

Barks, i cant think what could have caused that, probably some sort of problem with your auto box, we all know what pieces of s**t they are :D

Took it out for run, same as before, top end sounds not to healthy even more, lumpy on one side (this was syptom a few months back when i got it on Conzult at Jeffs, but slowly got better over the weeks, but compresion still low)put screwdriver tip on plenum etc and handle end into ear trick, and its well rattely, plus a small bottom end knock,to sum up,its well tired, well fooked:D so finger out,now getting transplant and a few other bits sorted on it;) still gonna be crapping myself that all goes well, hate the idea of being without it for a month or so from October:(

ps,would allso mention that i took off oil filler cap and theres shit loads of smoke coming out(engine was hot!)any pointers, piston rings etc:confused:

Sounds like blow-by from toasted piston rings if its fuming out the oil filler hole at hot tickover. A rebuild and re ring should do it but if it has been hard used it may need a rebore with new pistons. If you go to all that work then prolly regrind the crank as well.

Might as well get another engine!

Yep WillieO,my thoughts, well toasted,i was going to get it re built but probably not worth it now,the whole lot prob needs changing in there, plus one thing that has bugged me and previous owner, this engine is from an Manual, but me Z an auto, prior to this engine being fitted it used to run 13 sec quarters, then it went pop on a rolling road, then was fitted with an manual engine, then it would not run better than high 13s and low 14s,John did say it never felt the same mid torgue,so after having a talk with the Mechanic that will do the job he recomends using the newly acquired Auto engine, and i would like to get it back to a normal Auto to be honest,so we will se if its quicker and performs better in genral, could be all tosh off course and all in the mind:D ;)
