Hi,

Anyone have any idea's what would cause quite a large amount of smoke from the left bank of the car. I have ruled out the turbo but am now stuck as it is quite bad!!

Any Idea's??????????

Cheers

I have had the turbo's replaced due to a bearing going in the left bank turbo. I presumed this would also be the cause of the smoke but still appears to be about the same. The car has been run to ensure it is not just burning excess oil left in the exhaust from the previous turbo fault but no luck.

I have not changed the pcv and being fairly new to the zed I have no idea where they are or what is involved in changing them. Would this cause quite heavy smoke and would it be affected by the turbo leaking oil through the rear seal before it was changed??

The smoke apears to be if you sit idling then when you pull away.

Please help.

The zed is starting to get very very expensive. spent £4250 buying the car and have spent nearly the almost £4500 on repairs in the 10 months I have owned the car.

I still love it though

IMO smoke from idle when pulling away (with PCV/turbos eliminated) may well indicate worn valve stem seals / valve guides (less likely). If its smoking, its more likely to be an exhaust stem seal.

These are normally rubber, and can go hard and crack after mucho hot use. Normal driving wouldn't show stem seal wear, but when idling oil can seep down the stems and into the exhaust.

Only remedy (AFAIK) is heads off :( , new stem seals.

Of course could be someting else.....

change the PCV's & breathers 1st matey, its inexspensive & easy to do.

it is possible that its valve stem oil seal wear, tho this would usually show up on overrun too.

as its only on one bank, & youve already done the turbo's, its quite likely to be a PCV/breather problem as there is 1 per bank

:)

Would running at tickover with the oil filler cap off not show up a duff pcv? You would feel the suction and by taking the cap off stop the system sucking oil into the turbo if that is what happens

Willie,

I'm suffering from a smoking driver side exhaust (just after a dec-cat) - I've been keeping a watch on oil levels and I find the oil filler cap is really difficult to remove.

Would the suction by dodgy PCV's be responsible for this?

If your PVC valves are not working correctly I though pressure would increase, hence the dipstick popping out.

My oil filler cap is hard to take off sometimes. Things expand when they get hot so the cap wuld feel tigher.

Try starting it with the filler cap already off. If it wont start it already points to the PCV or some related fault drawing air (fumes) permanently from the crankcase into the inlet manifold and vacuuming it. I have to admit that I dont understand how PCV's and breather kits affect the turbos. I imagined the suction was either drawing oil into the manifold and then through that cylinder bank of the engine to be burnt rather than past the exhaust side turbine seal on that side.

If it starts but you feel a lot of suction when you put your hand over it or alternatively a lot of fumes and crankcase pressure it could point to blown piston rings.

Good luck

Willie

My filler cap is really hard to remove & I've done my pcv,s
