I have just recently put in a JWT chip to the ol Z. After installing it etc .. Started her up and the following occured.

1. White smoke from both exhausts

2. Very strong petrol smell

3. Uneven climbing through the rev range .. slightly juddery.

I didn't drive the car because I didn't want to do any damage, just started her up and let her tick over etc ...

There has never been any smoke before, not from the exhausts.

The old chip was not stock but it was chipped in Japan. I had a look at the maps with a friend and it was rather aggresive on the timing front to say the least, also the rev limiter was set to 8000:eek:

Any ideas?

Cheers ... Chris

Chris, it sounds like you have the wrong map for your injectors. Have you got a chip for stock injectors? If so, maybe you have 555s in there - if you do, the duty cycle must be less for the same amount of fuel.

Hope this makes some sense.

Cheers for the reply Andy.

I have put a standard JWT chip so it should have the bog standard generic JWT maps.

To be quite honest I don't know what injectors I have. Would a JWT chip (as standard) not custom mapped be able to cope with 555's?

Like I said, I don't know what injectors I have got as I haven't had the car that long but the previous chip was a KS Rom and it was really aggresive .. but it ran sweet as a nut.

Maybe the same reason as you did?????

very good point mate ....

It did run sweet but I wanted to run at a higher psi safely without screwing things up engine wise. The chip that was socketed was cool but I wasn't sure if it would run safely at higher psi, so I thought I would get the JWT chip as it would have good fuel mapping to let me run at a higher boost safely.

The chip was a jap chip and I didn't understand what it could run psi wise so I thought it would be prudent to get the JWT one because it is supposed to be ok.

I still have the old chip so I can put it back in but I still don't know what I can run boost wise. A friend had a look at the maps and said that he hadn't seen anything quite like it .... so ... hence the JWT

I haven't had the car v long so maybe the injectors had been upgraded

It came with an older boost controller + apexi afc but I wanted to

be safe rather than sorry. You never know do you?

My guess is that you have 555's on that car, and/or something else that requires that bizarre fuel map in the ECU you originally had ;) And therefore the white mist and hunting etc are because it's running stupidly rich now, with the ECU pumping in fuel thinking it has normal size injectors.

See if you can see what colour the injector connectors are (the side of the connector thats on the top of the injector - not the bit on the loom, obviously :D).. A pain to see, I know, but that will be the easiest way of seeing what size injectors you have.

Thanks for the advice ...

Does make sense if they are bigger injectors ... now call me a **nt but where are these injector connectors located ... I am learning about the car as I go and I have had no reason to look at the injectors ..

I presume to find out for sure you have to remove the plenum?

Can you give me an idea of where to look for the connectors please? .. I have looked on TT net but to no joy ...

Any advice much appreciated .. and I will have a butchers ..

Thanks

Chris

They will sit opposite the coild pack connectors forming a V shape.

They sit on the inside of the coil packs if that makes any sense.

Hard to describe, but here goes;

You want to be looking inbetween the intake runners - just 'inside' (further toward the centre of the engine) the coil pack's.. You should have basically another set of six wires that disappear down, quite a way..

You can see them without removing the inlet manifold though - but you'll probably need a torch, and a tiny screwdriver to get an injector connector off (use it to slide the metal retainer out of the connector). The easiest one to see is probably cylinder 3 - middle one on the drivers side..

Does that make sense? It did to me, but I already know where they are :)

Thanks Stuart ..

By the way ... the info on your site is great.

found it really useful

nice 1

Chris

i had this problem but after a good 20mile trip it sorted itself out i did let it idle for 5 mins though. have you tried driving it yet. ECU learn curve.

Thanks everyone for the replies .. really helpfull.

Took the ECU out this morning and checked the connections on the harness and ECU .. all looked ok ... Connected it again and went out of my way to make sure that the connection was as tight as I could possibly get it .. anyways .. started her up and let her idle for a few minutes .. still some smoke but not nearly as bad as before .. smooth through the revs.

Took her out ans she drove real nice :-) No smoke and she was lovin it ... as it goes so was I.

Got home, let her cool right down and then started her up again .. no smoke at all ... correct tickover ... problem sorted I hope .. Like you said ... There has to be a learning curve but damn she learnt quick ... Happily loves 1 bar but generally will take it easy and ease it in ..

Thanks again
