There`s enough of us out there now with the 99 spec front bumper and associated (small) number plate.

Anyone been pulled by the lads in tit helmets and told they`re illegal?

I ask as one of my staff has a scooby with a similar plate and was forced to have it changed.

My assumption about the 99 spec being legal as original equipment is sound..right?

My front is a Stillen,my numberplate is smaller than the size needed for a 99 spec front, never been asked any questions about it in over 3 years.

Only small front plates are allowed on J spec cars;)

The law is now, that IMPORT cars can have the same size plate as the country it came from. I think this is due to the air flow blocked by a larger plate. However UK ones must have a full sized ones regardless the fact whether there is no difference between most Jap and UK spec cars.

If you get pulled and you drive a Jap import they can not make you change the size of the plate IF you have a Japanese sized number plate on. If you have any other sized one, bar UK size, make you change the size and issue a fine.

So does anyone know (not guess) what the Jap size is? This is what it all comes down to I suppose.

some more urban myths!!

front no plates that are smaller than standard size are only permitted on import vehicles where a standard UK plate will not fit!.

a UK plate will still physically fit so its still illegal to fit a smaller one.

I for one would never do such a thing ;) :D

Here are the requirements:

http://www.dvla.gov.uk/vehicles/regmarks/reg_marks_current_requirements.htm

It does seem to suggest that provided you keep to the respective character size you can for say a short index number have the plate margins reduced to around 11/13mm and hence have a smaller plate size.

Certain imported vehicles may be permitted to display number plates with smaller characters if:

The vehicle does not have European Community Whole Vehicle Type Approval

AND

The vehicle's construction/design cannot accomodate standard size number plates

Hmmmm, seems that 2nd point maybe up for interpretation. The way a standard size front plate would fit on a 99 spec front is quite ridiculous........but is that good enough reason to qualify? I would argue it is....I mean the ends are well flapping about in mid air!

Paul C and James300 are right.

Unless you fancy taking on the plod about the interpretation of

The vehicle's construction/design cannot accomodate standard size number plates

My guess is that this might get you a sympathetic hearing from the magistrate but it's tough to argue that the 300ZX cannot accomodate standard size at the front when all UK 300ZXs can.

At the rear, however, they cannot physically accommodate UK size so would be allowed the smaller size.

Now I've got UK size letters on a J size rear plate and this is strictly, speaking illegal!

Cheers - Gio

I have Jap size numbers (67mm) on the front and rear plates with a std size UK front plate - no point in attracting unwanted attention is there ...

Seems to fit OK.
