Hiya people,

 

Just been trying to fit a timing belt, but have the following problem

 

I can lign up the marks on the sprockets and the belt no problem, bu when i line up the mark on the crank the marks on the cams dont line up with the dots on the back plate! yet the marks on the timing belt still line up with the cam marks!

 

Can you tell mew it this is right, or have i messed up? The engine turns uver like that with no piston/valve contact!

Mathew, You have it correct, use the sprocket and crank markings and the markings on the belt as the reference points, do not worry about the back plate markings at this stage, they are more of a guide than an acurate setting, if the cam sprockets and crank are all correct then thats it.

Thanks for the help people, glad i got right, was pulling my hair out tryiing to get it all to line up!

 

So hopefully if all goes well, i'll be up and running in time for trax!

Just one point - was the arrow on the belt pointing away from the engine? If not, thats why its out. TBH whenever I've done a belt the marks have been reasonably close - enough not to cause any worries anyway. Can't see you being able to get the marks lined up though if the belt was on the wrong way round ;)

Thanks m8, but the belt is on the right way round! (did you think i was that silly?). it all lines up just the 4 dots on the cam backplate are sligtly out!

Put my timing belt on last night - all lined up perfectly - have I done something wrong I wonder?? :) Seriously though, all was spot on.
