Three men are out on the town on a saturday night.

They get so drunk and miss the last bus home.

One of the men says "why dont we get a room in a hotel"?? So they find the nearest hotel and go upto reception.

The receptionist tells them there is only one room left and the price is £30.

The three men each shove £10 on the desk and are shown to there room.

Five minutes later the receptionist realises that she has charged them the midweek price instead of the £25 weekend rate.

She gets five pounds out of the till and tells the porter to take the change upto the three men.

The unscrupulous porter puts two pounds in his pocket and tells the men they were overcharged by £3, each of the men takes back £1 meaning that they have only paid £9 for the room each... 3x9=27, add £2 from the porters pocket which takes it to £29 wheres the last pound gone???

Whats going on there???

;)

There is no last pound.

They each paid £9, so they paid £27 in total.

Of that £27, the porter took £2, leaving £25, which is the amount they paid for the room. ;)

Ah there you are Dave ;):D

"of that £27 the porter took £2..." the porters bit isn't part of the 3x£9.

Try again :D

The porters £2 IS part of the 3x£9......its the remainding from what the actual charge is.

Dave........we finally agree on one of these stoopid things!

The receptioist gave the porter £2 to much

you confuse the maths, the correct sum should be

(9*3)+3=30

There was a total of £35 which can be accounted for like

£10 each for the room = £30

£3 refund = £33

£2 "tip" = £35

Each man should have got £1.66 from the change. The porter simply took the .66 which = £2

More rewording of the question ;) ...

Ok, another way of asking the question:

£30/3 = £10 each initially

A B C

10 10 10

(1) (1) (1) returned (PLUS[\b] £2 nicked)

--- --- ---

9 + 9 + 9 = £27

Porter has the £2, add £27 = £29, where's the other pound? ;)

Dont understand that bit, but this sentence is the way to go ;)

the men paid £30 and were given £3 back from £5 change

30 + 5 -3 = 32

take the £2 away for the porter and the scenario makes sense, you have to account for all the money in the situation.

They paid £30.

They were given £3 back.

The porter took £2.

The room cost £25.

£30 = £25 + £3 + £2

Where's the problem? :p :D

Its not really a riddle, its more obfuscation via selecting how you subtract and add the £1's

They should have paid 8.33 instead of £9.

They should have received back £1.66.

simple.

The confusion (in my mind ;) ) arises when dividing the wrong figure by three.

Really? :D

Well let me put it another way,

If each man paid £10 and the receptionist took £30 then gave the porter £5 of which he took £2 and then gave the men back £3 making it seem like they only paid £3 which would lead to £27 and £2 from the porter, however this is not the case, they actually paid £30 and and were given a £1 back each which has nothing to do with the £30 they paid in the first place.

So the to put it in simple terms:

(10 * 3) / 3 = 3 + 4(23 -2 = 21) * 2 * 3 / 3

Got it ?

My turn. I think I have a relatively good explanation.

OK...they paid £27 for their accommodation of which £25 went to the receptionist and £2 to the porter.

Confusion is caused when you add the two pounds to the £27. This would be incorrect as the £2 is included in the £27 (3x£9). In short, they paid £25 for the room, £2 to the porter, and had £3 remaining from the original £30, QED.

Anyone still confused?????;) :D :D :D
