started up my car for the first time in about a month ( havent driven cos one of the turbos has blown) and a new noise has appeared from the engine. it sounds alot like tappet noise, increases with revs, stops the minute the engine is stopped and is coming from the offside bank of cylinders.

it sounds very loud though and didnt stop after idleing for bout 3 minutes. is tappet noise something that could occur due to not driving the car for a long time and will stop once the cars been driven a few times or could it be something else enyone can think of? i know a slight bit of tappet noise is common for the first few seconds after starting up the car but i didnt think for as long as i had.

can anyone shed any light on this please?

When I've come back from holiday sometimes mine is a bit tappetty. After a few starts it has gone. Just check underneath the car for any oil leaks though.

Is it about due for a change?

Have you checked the level on the dipstick?

checked the oil just before i started it up and the level was at high. just had the oil changed cos i had to get a service done for my warranty (fingers crossed will pay for the turbo!), best oil i could get was fuly synth 5 50W. the only leak there is is a slight one where the mechanic didnt change the sump washer.

its reasurring to hear you've had the same problem. i'll try driving it around the block a few times and see if it goes away. the other thing is that there was a bit of a grinding/rubbing from the rear when i first moved the car so i think the brakes may have siezed as the handbrakes been on for nearly 2 whole months! :(

thanks for your help james:)

If it does hang about then changing to a thicker oil may cure it. Shame the mechanic didn't change the sump washer, its a copper crush washer and should be changed every time.

I had this problem it was a very loud tapping noise. It was cured by changing the oil then after a few stops and starts it was cured.

I had the same problem ages ago when I used 5-50W oil.

I changed to 10-40 to test it and it stopped the noise.

I now run 10-60 Castrol RS and its never been happier. :D

i wanted 10 60 but the mechanic couldnt get hold of it, but i'll need an oil change after the turbo replacement anyway so i'll change to castrol RS then. anyone up for a group by from ay3388? :D he can get a proper good deal cant he
