I have searched the previous posts on vibration, non seam to be exactly like mine.

I can feel vibration in the seat back which starts at about 40 and ends at about 50 or 55, and it does not seem to occur after been run for a while.

Does this rule out prop shaft bearing ? If this bearing was gone would it get progressively worse with speed ?

I have only had the car a couple of months, I have not had the prop shaft off, but I dont know if the previous owner did.

Thanks

John

it will be the prop vibration, caused mainly by the rear gearbox mount sagging which then wears the centre bearing...

Not too bad a job did mine recently 'cos I too got vibrations at 40mph then disappeared at about 80mph but was noticeably worse when cold....So you'll need a new centre bearing & gearbox mount.;)

Thanks Jonny,

Where is the centre bearing located ?

What do you have to remove to get to it ?

Any special tools needed ? Where can I get all the bits from ?

How long did it take you ?

Thanks

John

You'll need to get it up on axle stands, I removed the whole exhaust system just to make it easier, then it's just a case of unbolting the propshaft, very straight forward when your underneath looking at it. You'll need a large vice to split the propshaft to change the bearing.

Took me and me M8 about 4 hours but that was taking our time and sorting one or two other bits while we were there.

I'd get the parts from Courtesy if I were you bearing is about $104 dollars (£70 odd), and the mount about £50 odd I think.

If you wanted you could just replace the mount & see what happens but it's not economical because the bearing will have taken some stick, so you just may as well replace it. ;)

The same thing happened on my z but ive only changed the prop bearing i didnt think about the gearbox mounting, illhave to look into that, where can i get one?

Hi John.

I had exactly the same with my Z when it came over from Japan.

Definate propshaft problem so I opted for a new once piece steel prop shaft made by a company called reco prop based in Luton, Beds.

This is a cheaper alternative to replacing the centre bearing and also the other aluminium / carbon option for the states.

The only criticism / observations I notice is that there there is more transmission noise than before and an occasional light 'clonk' as drive is picked up although this has been the same since day 1 and isn't getting any worse.

Other than that, the power delivery to the rear wheels is very brisk and I'm happy with it.

If I remember, the cost was around £350 plus fitting.

Thanks everyone......I will have to get it sorted out soon before it gets much worse.

Cheers

John

Well I'd personally start with the cheap option.

Take you car to a wheel specalist and get the front wheels balanced.

  • Author

I have had all the wheels balanced.

The vibration in the seat back is sort of 'metallic' , its hard to describe.

No vibration at all in the stearing wheel.

John

Always amazed at how many people dont know what wheels, when out of balance, give what vibration.

Front wheels shake the steering

Back wheels shake the car.

Surely this is more expensive (£350 + labour) than replacing the centre bearing?

Is the bearing (and mounts) strictly a Nissan part, or does anyone know of an alternative supplier ?

Surely it would not be worth importing one fron the States, with the duty, vat and other fees ?

Thanks

John

...it'll most certainly be the auto box rear mount. About £50 from Mike Feeney 01277 374201. Replace this first - take you about half an hour. I replaced the centre bearing first - expensive to buy - about £140, with no positive effect. But once the rear gearbox mount was changed then all was smooth...

It's easy to do, 12 and 14 mm ring spanners and a trolly jack to hold up the gearbox whils you remove the mount.

good luck

Thanks Jack,

I would prefer to just replace the gearbox mounts, a lot less labour and cheaper parts. Does the fact that it seams to be better when its been running for a while suggest that it might be the bearing ? (expanding when hot, or could this principal be aslo true of the mounts ?)

Thanks everyone,

John

Also, is the rear gearbox mount more accessible with the front or rear on axle stands ? I was thinking of trying those car ramps from Halfords, anyone tried them ?
