Running windows ME. Have a USB 4 port hub, which is on the system and showing no problems in Device manager. Having problems getting windows to recognise anything I plug into the hub, especially my USB/parallel printer adapter. Initially it recognised it as an unknown usb, but wouldnt accept the driver for it, now, although it shows up on the power properties for the hub as connected, it doesnt show on device manager. tried unplugging/ resetting etc. The whole lot was working before i reloaded windows ME. Any ideas? is XP any better?

Not sure whether this will help, but have you tried using windowsupdate.microsoft.com ?

And secondly, IMHO, yes XP is significantly better. Most things just 'work' and many more devices are recognised.

ME was a joke. I use Win2000, as its less resource hungry than XP, though if you prefer a nice flashy front end, go for that. :)

Andy, bigbscan, thanks for the replies.

Andy, did try update, but it only wanted to give me security updates. I will scarf a copy of XP, it seems the way to go

XP is definately better.

As Bigbscan said 2000 is built on the same archetecture but the trouble is if you're a game player (like me) not much works. It really is for work/business purposes.

Like Robtor said, depends what you use your pc for. Most modern games work with 2000, and XP is really 2000.1.

Just adds more compatabilty and more functionality. But uses more resources.

If your pc is a few years old, go for 2000.

If its new, then XP is fine.

If you have the space, then when you install 2000 (Dont know about XP) you can have both ME (For older games) and 2000 as well. But you should have multiple partitions on your Hard drive (makes your Hard drive look like two drives) set up first.

Depends what you feel comfortable doing. Hope this helps.

if you gonna update Win2kwith windows update, make sure you install Service pack 4 first...

This should cure most problems like this.

pete- its a computer mate , not a calculator :)

Thanks again for all the advice, PC is brand new, just built the bugger, the real PITA is that it was all working before the weekend, but some moody prog I got knackered ME, so i reloaded it, and hey presto , nothing works. Couldnt really be arsed splitting the drive, as I dont do a lot of gaming, apart from quake and it would run on my phone :)

If youre gonna get XP make sure its the latest version with service pack 1 as the first version like most other microsoft OS are bugtastic mate ;)

Cheers
