Do you think it is advisable to fit an external automatic transmission oil cooler to my import ? Even though it has made it through its 11 year life without one. So far the box seems ok, but I would like to prolong its 'death'. Which also reminds me, what were Nissan thinking of when they designed the autobox sump without a drain plug ?

Thanks

John

yes bloody good idea to fit a proper oil cooler for the auto box. its the heat that normaly will kill an autobox and these *******s run bloody hot

Just had one fitted to mine, the box runs so much cooler!!

And it a lot smoother through the changes, even under full boost!

;)

Well worth it IMHO.

Thanks both of you,

Matty, did you buy the kit from Z Centre with all the hoses and brackets ?

Isnt the problem with the imports that they have no oil coolers at all, so adding one to the box is more difficult (no existing brackets or hoses to hook on to)

Thanks

John,

Jeff at Zedworld did mine, I had UK Auto which cools the autobox through the rad, design fault!!

I bought a Jap rad from Macca's mate up north (£140 cheaper than a stock rad from Nissan!!!) and it has bigger fins, so he tells me so cools better, and then to that an aftermarket oil cooler was fitted, Z centre's bit of kit is a good way to go.

Give Jeff a ring at Zedworld and have a chat with him about it, he did mine just before Billing and will know more about it than me.

I just know that the main rad keeps everything a lot cooler than the old stock UK one and the autobox cooler keeps the box loads cooler, I used to be able to feel the heat in the cockpit of the Z but now it's nice and cool.

As far as I know the import auto does have a cooler but it's smaller.

Yes, But I think the import autobox is cooled from within the radiator isnt it ?

John

Some clarity required here I think ...

Jap auto car has :-

Radiator that has a smaller area than equiv. UK car

It has a single tank built into the main rad that is used to cool the autobox oil

It has a small engine oil cooler

UK/Europe auto car has :-

Radiator that has 17% more area the equiv UK car

It has two tanks built into main rad for autobox oil cooling

It has a much larger engine oil cooler (approx twice the size)

It has a diff oil cooler

IMHO it is well worth getting a 'proper' autobox oil cooler - many companies that rebuild the boxes will not give a guarantee unless this is done.

No Matty not fins you taken up fishing?;)

Veins the rad you got has a better flow rate than stock;)

Origonal question John YES! fit one.

Thanks

That certainly has cleared that up, now I know exactly what it has stock and what needs to be done

Cheers

Sorry to be pedantic but also has yet another transmission oil cooler parked in front of the engine oil cooler as well as the oil /water pipes in the main rad. At least on my 92K it does and it's stock.

On the subject of older cars without decent transmission oil cooler - they probably survive due to having been driven well and not confined to city work where the transmission will get hot and tired.

Thanks for that update, wasn't aware of the. The UK spec. Series I model I have looked at definietly didn't have that, and neither did my Jap spec. Series II.
