Anyone replaced steering rack bushes, if so what sort of time's involved as it looks an akward job.

I've been told that you need to lift the engine up a little to allow bush removal and fit. So, yes a b****r of a job.

You going to fit polyurethane bushes?

Advice given to me was to wait 'til the turbo needs changing.

Yeah I have Energy Suspension Rack bushes to fit but they need done as when the steering is rocked side to side over a pit, the rack moves more than a quarter of an inch and they were snagged at MOT but the steering doesnt feel right either, maybee thats in my mind but i am gonna try and replace them next week....fingers crossed.

Cheers again John Crisp

Ah yes, that kind of forces your hand.

I'm interested to know you get on as that's the only one not yet done on my car; that's mainly because Luke ain't sent it yet.:p

thats what I,m waiting for cos luke was supposed to send me my bushes as well last week.

Richard

must have been busy getting ready for billing

I had mine done and I think it took the mechanic around 60-90 minutes. He said one side was fine, but the other was a b*gger of a job. :(

,Cheers Guys,

I am gonna attempt the bushes 2 nite after backshift so hopefully they wont take too long, fingers crossed.

Cheers Again John Crisp

Just a small point but you'll find it easier to work if you uncross your fingers:D :D :D :D :D

Ha Ha yeah that might help Simmo

2 hours to replace the bushes , LH easy ..RH more akward but plenty soap does help loads and also watch the wires at the inside of the RH bracket where the bracket bends 90 degrees as they might be damaged when tightening the bracket over the rack.

All in all a bit of a nightmare but worth it as i feel the difference in the steering on the car.

Hope this helps someone. Cheers John Crisp

That's sounds ok, considering you'd not done it b4.

So no need to lift the engine up then?

  • Author

No Simmo no need to lift the engine up but I did loosen the steering column shaft bolt into the universal joint to give the rack a bit more height but it will only life up maybee half an inch, I cut a plate of metal and put a bolt/nut in the hole and levered the bush into place with a screwdriver.

2 hours was maybee a long estimate but cause i'm tall I had to keep coming out the pit to stretch as my knees were feckin sore but maybee if i did it again 60 to 90 minutes is maybee a closer time to do the job.

Useful info John, thnx.

As you used a pit did you leave it on the wheels or lift up the front end?

Or would that not help to get at the steering rod bushes?

just done mine at weekend, wasn't too bad a job like you said the rack bush on drivers side was a bit fiddly to get new bush around rack. also I changed antiroll bar and tension bushes took me about 2hrs to do all job.Must say car feels a lot better.
