Hi folks

Hopefully someone out there can help me with some of the minor problems my just purchased 1985 300ZX has. Nothing major - and she is an absolute joy. Star Wars dash - Targa top and in showroom body condition - a steal at AUD5990.00 so I am not worried about spending a few bucks on her.

#1. Fuel display - Fuel gauge was indicating 2/3 full when I collected it - dropped one bar and then the low fuel light came on. There was only 20 litres in the tank when I filled it. Sender unit in fuel tank faulty?

#2. Oil Pressure display - gauge is obviously working as it heads to the top on startup and then drops to and stays on zero. Sender unit need replacing?

#3. Compass display. This has some movement intermittently but generally is stuck at WSW. Replace compass sender?

#4. There appears to be a motor or fan runing constantly in the unit that houses the spotlights on the front inside roof. I can find no reference to it in the manuals. Any ideas? Whatever it is appears to not be running too happily.

Also there is what looks like a factory fitted sticker inside the perspex over the display hiding a display that seems from the manual to indicate "liters" remaining. Can anyone please tell me why this sticker is there?

Well there you go. Just gave the girl a bath and a light cut - polish tomorow.

What a damned fine piece of machinery!!!

Best regards

Ron

Hi Ron,

#4: What you hear is a vacuum-compressor,should only work for a few seconds when ignition is turned on.Think you have a disconnected hose. There are +/- 6 of them, leading to the valves of the ventilation/heating system.Look in the area where your battery is located....

Greetz from Holland,

Karel.

Thanks Karel

Will check that out in the morning. Problem is I dont like stopping her long enough to work on the problems *G*

And now the illumination on the climate control has gone down. Any ideas there? It still works fine, but one needs an Airbus A320 certification to keep up with the girl.

Replies on the other dot points wouldbe very much appreciated too.

Best regards

Ron

#2 - senders only last about 60K if you're lucky. Common problem.

#4 - is drawing cockpit air over an airconditioning temperature sensor. makes a whirring noise. It should be running permanently but you shouldn't be able to hear it. There's a 'how to' dismantle it and stop it being so noisy somewhere - takes the patience of a saint to silence it - disconnect it if it bothers you that much, doesn't make much difference IMHO.

You sure you haven't got your lights on?? That can make your controls illumination dim somewhat (I guess?!)

Cheers!

RobH

Thanks so much RobH

I can live with the noise - thought something was astray. It cant be heard once the engine is on as the previous owner was kind enough to fit a massive 4" system from manifold to tailpipe - she sounds magnificent!

I will have the oil sender replaced asap as that is required info IMHO.

The fuel sender is a worry to me. Are these as fragile and expensive to replace?

Had a lovely day on Sunday - went to the Jazz Festival event her at the RSL Club - even dug out the '80s Crosby Stills and Nash tape and had that blaring. The girl seemed well pleased with her lot and performed faultlessly.

What a bleeding magnificent beastie she is.

As for the aircon panel - it was working when I picked her up - just worried I have done something to shut it down.

Thanks again

Best regards

Ron
