Had my new Zed a week (1989 TT Auto import) and started to notice hot water pissing out from under the car everytime I've stopped driving. I am not loosing any water from the Rad and I've been driving the car daily with no sign of overheating..........until today. Was driving it alot harder today and when I got home my temp gauge was creeping up past the half-way mark and i saw steam coming from the bonnet. Looked underneath and sure enough, steaming water everywhere so looked under the bonnet and could see steam coming from the front of the engine (I think) behind the fan rather than from the Rad. What shall I do? Is it worth me dumping the Rad and renewing the water/coolant and check all the pipes, see how that goes? I'm not a mechanic but can see some second had pumps for £20. Is it worth me taking it to Nissan to fit a new one or do you think my local back street garage could cope with fitting the second hand one quite easily? (they've not worked on a Zed before but looked after my 200sx with no probs before and they appear to be extremely competent mechanics!!!) Is it worth getting a new one from somewhere or will a second hand one from a 1992 car (low mileage) be alright?

Any advise would be really appreciated.

Dom

First check out the 2 short hoses just either side below the top water connection. They connect to each cylinder head. You'll need a small make up mirror and a torch. Do it when its hot and look for drips there. These hoses go every 3 years or so. The water drips down onto the water pump and eventually from the sump and can make it look like water pump. They tend to get a small crack in one of them and piss out water when really hot. I think a well duff water pump would leak even when cold tickover.

Of course it could also be your water pump. But look at these hoses. Not too hard to change and only about £8 from Nissan.

The hassle to change a water pump would suggest its false economy not using a new one if its gone.

Get a manual and look at the diagrams of the cooling system - or there's an on line one.

Could well be your water pump as they are a weak point on the 300 but as for a second hand one i think you will be wasting your time as it my go soon after fitting. How many miles has it done as it may be a good idea to have your cam belts at the same time. Z world will do you a good deal on having both done if you won’t to travel that far.

All the best sid:D

Thanks both. I'll try and take a look at those pipes today. Where can I get a new water pump from at a good price on the net? Zedworld look promising. anywhere else?

Checked but can't see anything obvious. But like I said, I 'aint no mechanic!! Anyway, headed off to work this morning and only got a few yards before she overheated!! Filled the RAD with water and it all came straight out onto the floor. Could not see any disconnected hoses but didn;t look too hard hard as I had lorries and shitting racing past me!!! Anyway, to cut a long story short, against my better judgment, it has ended up at my Nissan dealer as I was only araound the corner. I'll keep you posted.

Well Nissan have just called me back and have confirmed that it is the water pump that needs replacing. They have said it will cost me over £300 as it is 4hrs labour!! What do you reckon?

Give Jeff a bell at Zedworld.........

Matty.

mines booked in at jeffs for the same problem, im having cambelt done too, leaks out after a week and constantly refilling it

300 quid!!! i wouldnt take it to nissan dealers if it was the last place on earth. most of em havent even seen a z32 in the flesh, never mind worked on em.

Dom, if you do end up repacing the waterpump then replace the cambelt at the same time. If coolant water gets onto the cambelt it can damage the belt and cause premature failure.

I wouldn't normally say this, but try giving nistech in Swansea a ring.

Nisstech just done 2 new turbos, de-cat pipes and O2 sensors on mine. Top People!!!!! Fair Prices!!!!:D

About 20 miles. :)

I have heard pretty good things about them actually, though I don't personally trust any ****er.

They are a Nissan specialist, not a performance place but they have relinered GTi_R and S14 blocks before to fit forgies.

The guy (Simon) used to be a workshop manager at a dealership aparently.

Just ring em and ask them straight if they can do it and listen out for a nervous 'yes' as a reply LOL.

Or the classic mechanic 'sucking air over teeth' noise.. :D

I swear anyone who works with cars gets trained to make that noise somewhere.. there must be a school or something..

You know, the noise they make before telling you that you're gonna need to sell a kidney.. :D

LOL yeah, my mates dad (bob) is a builder, he does that and nods his head then says in a resignful way, 'Mmmm (sucks teeth) I don't know'

The cambelt has already been changed twice in its life. Once in Japan and once only a few thousand miles ago. I've seen a few Z32's there mind so they seem to know their stuff. Like I said, I wouldn't have work done on it there by choice but I broke down around the corner and wanted to get it sorted so I suppose I cannot really complain.

Nissan have done the water pump already so I can't get the camblet changed now!!! They are also telling me I have a small water leak coming from the back of one of the heads but have said it can be sealed! Is this true and how long will it last before the head gaskets go. People have told me it should last forever but I am feeling a bit unsure.

Any advise would put my blood pressure back to normal!!!
