I just wondered if anyone has ever heard of anything like a warning lamp for the detonation circuit. After my recent scare, it occured to me that since I have an avc-r, that if my ecu recognized detionation, that it would not go into safety boost, but the timing would be retarded (which I did not notice. Would it be easy to wire up some sort of warning l.e.d to tell me that something is up.

I suppose the only other way is to do a regular ecu diagnostic run. Does a Tectom or any other device give warnings?

Cheers

Vijay

Vijay,

Have a look on Maciek's (Z Viking) website as he has a write up on this.

The main problem is that the detonation sensor circuit cannot compensate for detonation after 3000rpm, even with the BCSV connected. It is also very hard to hear detonation beyond this level due to road and exhaust noise levels.

Other than that, it's probably worthwhile fitting the warning light to check for possible problems.

For those that have disconnected the BCSV electrical plug and have the MDM100, the BCSV should switch off when the gas pedal is depressed. If it stays on then you are in safety boost.

D'oh - beat me to it smile.gif

this is precisly what i am in the process of having made, now, what i can get you is an egt sensor for about 200 squid which is electronic and can tell you when the temp is too hot, this means you are leaning out and therefore detonation is ont he horizen, but that is a stop gap

losing me here. I just want the cheapest way of knowing if my car would normally be in safety boost, but saying that I love a gadget. I'll be looking for your future posts on your particular gadget.

Vijay

just give me a bit of time, and it will come lol

As far as I know (and t'aint much), Z is in Safety Boost (wash your mouth out Glen) when it is cold from start.

I'd love to know when my ECU has told the engine it can go out of safety boost (washed out mouth again) and into good old fuck the imprezas boost.

Count me in if you find such a light. (unless its is light green in colour smile.gif )

LINK (who make the rapidly gaining in popularity 300LINK) make a detonation sensor warning light thingambob which has 5 or 6 LED's on the front of it, which light up in severity of the detonation.. it's almost useless up at redline as there's too much engine noise (note I say almost).. but you can pick up detonation when all the LEDS light up.. a mate had one an a 400+ hp EVO engine.. at say 2000revs just one LED would dimly flicker.. hitting the revlimiter all of them would.

It's an option.. but I can pickup with my ears detonation in a Z.. it's not that hard once you know what to listen for.

what exactly does it sound like. I thought it sounded like "pinking" and I could have sworn I heard that on the weekend, but my ecu has no error codes.

I believe it's when the coolant temp is 158 deg F or 70 deg C, but don't quote me on that.

Edit: or 60 deg F ??

fucking imprezas.. do it a good 3-5 mins after the temp guage has hit level otherwise you'll fuck your motor. You *should* wait for the oil temp to get up higher and all the engine internals to be up to operating temp.. just because the temp guage has hit level and it's gone out of safety boost doesn't mean you should go hard.

Once that 5mins is up bend them over the table..

Theres a motorway onramp that (if it's a warm day) by the time I get there the car is ready for action.. and theres a pesky silver WRX which never seems to want to stop coming back for more... 2nd gear is just ccccyyaaaa... he thought my Z was slow the first time I came across him (as it was cold and I wasn't even half playing) ... hehehe.. don't think so Tim.

hehe yeh,
