Hi folks

Charlie's Z has snapped its cambelt!!!

It occurred as he stopped at a traffic light. The engine just died as he came to a stop as though it had stalled. He tried restarting a few times thinking it had stalled for some weird reason but there was no response from the engine.

His garage believes that either the cambelt has snapped or the teeth on the belt has given way.

Charlie is not sure as yet but what would be the likely extent of the damage???

Are we talking of slight engine work, reconditioning of engine or replacement?????

Cheers in advance

Van

Snapped or bent valves, possible piston damage.

you will need..... 1..?many new valves.inlet £17 Ex£40

2..heads checked for damage.about £100

3..new full head rebuild set.about £200

4..new timing belt.about £50

5..recommend water pump£40ish

6..recommend thermostat£8ish

7..recommend tensioner pulley set£60 i think

And a heck of a lot of patience or money to pay someone to do it for ya!! Either will do.

Not 100% sure on prices, just a roughish guide. And i would say about 30 hours labour at whatever rate?

Good luck...

Don't forget the valve guides too! ;) Possible rod damage etc... Depends how quickly the engine stopped really....

Fair enough duff!!!Think i covered the guides in the head check?? But rod damage,,wouldnt that be a choker!!Are them prices about right duff? And what ya reckon to the 30 hrs bit?seem fair?

LOL sorry was just tryin to be awkward ;) Yeah you're pretty much spot on with your figures. The rod damage was (tbh) worse case senario but entirely possible - choker, I think fucker is more suitable ;):D Under these circumstances, I would think how lucky I was, not to have thrown a rod.... Now THAT would cost some...

Having personally worked on at least 2 belt breakers and one that was 13 teeth out I can be fairly sure provided the engine speed was low as you say and he only tried to restart on the starter and not a tow start then try fitting a new belt and start it up, in each case I have seen where the engine speed was low NO damage was done. obviously every case is different but he may be lucky and a new belt will put it right, got to worth a go anyway.

Thanks very much for the replies chaps.

I do hope for Charlie's sake that Jeff is right.

I've passed all the replies to Charlie as he can't get access to the forum for some strange reason.

Thanks again

PS I'll update everyone when I hear any more news from Charlie...and of course email any further replies on this forum to him.

GOOD LUCK,

I only ever worked on one"belt broken" VG30DETT engine and it snapped 5 valve heads clean off and bent 4 while it was doin less than 10mph from cold. Some ya win, some ya lose..,,,,,,i lost!!!

Dont mean to be the bearer of bad news, but when my cam pulley snapped last year it turned most of my valves into not particularly attractive paperweights:eek:

On the bright side though at least there was no rod damage......;)

My cambelt pulley snapped off aswell couple of years ago aswell and luckily for me didn't damage any valves. had a con rod bent when stripped down but think that was like that before so was going to strip it anyway.

How fast were you going when it happened to you??

I was, somewhat unfortunately doing 80ish:rolleyes:

I had a tensioner break at idle. I also (well the AA man) also turned it over about 10 times!!!!!

No damage! So I feel if it goes at idle you should be OK.

How fast were you going when it happened to you??

I was going only about 30mph along road so just over idle

  • 2 weeks later...

Just to let you all know, Charlie got the cambelt changed and the Zed is fine. No damage was done from the cambelt snapping at rest, thank god for that.

Thanks to all for the advice.:)
