If anyone can give me some help I would be sooo grateful.

I am not mechanically minded so please bare with me. Driving home tonight I was in third gear just changing up to 4th when there was what can only be described as a loud hiss from the engine bay. From then on things aren't good. My poor car started to judder when the acelerator was depressed and was genuinely very poorly. Boost has gone .. no boost at all. I have Jap import and it hardly went above the 0. It would also start to fluctuate rev wise at junctions and just didn't want to go at all.

Can anyone help? ... I am so gutted .... any ideas?

Thanks Robtor .... I am praying that I haven't messed the car up.

I spent over 3 months looking for this car .... can't believe I have done this to it ....

Time for a beer methinks

Thanks for your replies .. will let you know how I get on tomorrow....

The nightmare continues....

Hi Webmonkey,

I have been reading all the comments back and forth, I cant offer any mechanical advice, I just wanted to say how sorry I am that you are experiencing problems so soon after getting your first zed. I got my first zed 2 weeks ago, I know how I would feel.

I sincerely hope and pray that the problem is not as serious as it may appear at the moment. Seeing all the people on this forum volunteering advice and willingness to help you must be of some comfort to you. It makes me feel that although all of us dont know each other personally, we have friends out there. Im quickly realising that the people who make up this forum must be the best on the net.

Hoping its something simple, and not too expensive.

Regards,

John

Hi John

What can I say .... Thanks for the post .... The people on this forum are great .... Thanks to everyone who posted their advice.

I am going to take the car to a good mechanic .... so I have heard, GDS Motorsports in Fordcombe and I really hope that it isn't as bad as it seems ... mind you ... the way the car is ... who knows.

Thanks for the post John ....

As soon as I know I will post ....

Hi dark warrior .... yea thos are the pipes ... from you photo I am reasonably sure that it was the far right pipe that had a smaller pipe going from it ... from underneath ...

Is the pipe you're referring to about 3/4" in diameter, right angled, and comes off the top of the lower of those two pipes on the far right, connects to a metal pipe bolted to the intake manifold (big silver thingy :)), and heads toward the back of the engine bay?

If so, that's the idle air feed, which is off the high pressure side of the passenger turbo. A big enough split in that pipe would lead to;

Crappy idle, probably hunting all over the shop

Bizarre off bost driving

Loss of boost

Which sounds like your problems.. You'd be surprised what a big enough split in that pipe could do, too..

Hi aaronjb ... the pipe in question is a really small pipe .... has to be 1/2 cm in diameter from I think the near side far right

Just coming from underneath one of the main air intake pipes

I wish I could post a pic but not possible ....

chris

Follow where that pipe goes.

3 Places it could go in my mind.

- On top of plenum, little pipe sticks out at about 45degreed to engine.

- Another little pipe by plenum, cant exactly remember what it looks like and i cant check as the Z's at the mot garage!

- Goes down towards the turbo, more precisely to the boost solenoid. This solenoid will have a wire going into it. This is the one you dont really want to have split.

Hi rabtor ... My mistake .... The pipe in question is directly below the near side far right main intake pipe .... it has two pipes clipped together ... one of these is split ...

Sorry for being a p***k .... The pipe doesn't come off of the main intake pipe at all.

LoL!

It's hard for me to picture in my head exactly what you're refering to now, the important thing is finding where it's connected the other end. I suspect you'll have to take off the 2 big pipes to see. Just undo the clips on both ends, can be a pain to get back on, wd40 can help and it's easier if they're warm.

OK ... I have traced the pipe .. it comes from a MS Motor sports (induction unit)????? and it goes into a air intake ...

Is this any help .... ?

  • Author

MS Autolook motor sports ... goes to the near side left intake ....

This is the pipe that has split.

Not to sure what you mean but sounds like it may not be pressurized. If it's not under pressure my over boost theory is out the window (good).

Found this picture, is it any of these?

In the picture?

Top u got the intake and you can see where the big intake pipes normally go. Just a handy picture as the big pipes have been removed showing the smaller pipes and possible the one which has ripped?

It is a really small unit has a couple of pipes from it .. one goes to the air intake ... this one is split .... I am guessing that it has something to do with air flow ....

All I can say is it is Autolook Motor Sorts ... surely must be something to do with air flow?

  • Author

wish I had a camera so I could take a pic for you .... will try to describe ...

Where abouts is this autolook motor sport thing?

  • Author

The thing in question is just below the cylindrical cyninder on near side .. the only cylindrical thing .. LOL .... The pipe from it goes to one of the air intakes .....

It goes to an area at the back of the engine at the top looking straight at it .. right in the middle ....

God you must think I am a right Twat .....

Sorry mate .. best I can do ...

Right now i get what you are talking about!

That cylinder is the fuel filter (i think thats what you mean), on this pic http://www.300zx.co.uk/forums/attachment.php?s=&postid=162933 (posted earlier) its just on the edge towards back?

If the ripped pipe goes back there you *probably* havent over boosted unless its for an aftermarket boost controller.

Theres no device in the car to adjust the boost?

And no i dont think ur a twat! lol

  • Author

Wish it could be that simple mate ... the unit is just below the fuel filter (cylindrical object) .. just positioned by the fuse box .. one cable runs to the back top of the engine ...right in the middle .. just by the red line in the pic .... the other runs to one of the air intakes .. (That is the one that has had it) ...

I have a really old apexi boost controller but it wasn't on when this happened ... Wouldn't turn it on because I didn't understand the controller .... I thought it would be better to be safe than sorry ... (reallly !!) .. doh ....

The pipe that goes round to middle back of engine, does it actually stop or go in the engine there, or does it run round and down the other side. Just wondering if this is the solenoid for your boost controller, if not, it isnt what i suggest, if it is, it could be.

  • Author

it stops right at the top of the engine .... doesn't go down at all ...

Stops right there .....

There are about three or four pipes ... that link together in a quadruple couplet .. maybe three ... can't remember at the mo ...

I wish I could have a good look .. but no chance ....

What do you think .... ?

I cant really picture the setup that well in my head ( and without my car here to reference), but i dont think it's a case of over boosting and basically blowing up your engine.

I'd still go for an intake pipes come off, probably on the turbos themselves or intercoolers.
