Hi All,

Following on from my post about a dodgy temperature sensor - my revs don't drop quickly when releasing the accelerator. It seems like the throttle isn't snapping shut, gently closing instead...(?) Is this likely? Worn springs perhaps? It's most noticeable when engine is cold, changing between gears at low revs - the revs actually go up a bit to about 2000 rpm before dropping. Idle speed is also too high - just below 1100 rpm when warm.

Any advice appreciated...

RobH

PS I've looked at MacieJ's erratic idle pages already.

Have you tired cleaning the Trottle Bodies and the tps connections ?.

Also if you replaced or fixed the temp sensor have you reset the ECU ?.

i have to admit I've been meaning to do the TB's for a while. I examined the TPS a while ago and it looked OK, checked voltages as good with AVC-R yesterday.

Maybe I'll try the TB's and reset the ECU. It should have been reset during auto/man gearbox swap but I couldn't swear to it. That was 400 miles ago so it should have settled down by now...

Cheers!

Maybe also clean out the idle valve which may be a bit gummed up - use carb cleaner spray - check manual - you need to disconnect the electrics from this to enable the idle rpm to be reset. Then it uses the ecu to hold the set rpm.

This valve is at the back off the plenum RHS near to the battery.

Just as a bit of anecdotal info, for those people who have had an auto/manual conversion ...

If you connect the neutral switch from the manual gearbox up to the ECU (something like pin 40 between the ECU and the autobox controller), when you hold down the clutch and put the box into any gear the revs rise about 300rpm. Dunno why though, but obviously this was required for the auto box.

As for the idle speed being too high, this does happen occasionally on mine and with the Techtom you can see that the AAC valve is usually stuck open around 85%, this should be nearer 15-20% on tickover.

SMW1 had a similar problem with high tickover and IIRC it turned out to be an air leak somewhere.

You have a good memory Andy, I forgot about this.

Yes I has a vaccum hose that had snapped off of the t connection in front of the battery. The hose lead to the back of the Plenum.

Once reconnected the idle dropped about 200 rpm.

Hi Rob.

F.Y.I. the battery was disconnected for around 7 days when your conversion was done.

My motor's getting looked at re the knackered oil pump, looks like they might admit to it after all. Here's hoping.

Nice to see you back on the board mate. D'you think 7 days is long enough to reset the ecu ;)

Good luck with your claim - dodgy b*ggers.

Gear box is spot on - shame about the rest of the car at the mo - LOL. Guy in a Celica finally caught up with me at the lights yesterday to ask 'what the f*ck's under the bonnet' - hoho!!

Getting the exhaust replaced in custom stainless next week so am leaving any further activities requiring ECU reset until then...

Cheers!

Seen this a few times, having the use of a Conzult does make it very easy to trace to be fair, the problem will almost certainly be with your TPS even though the setting of the base idle position is most likely ok the CLOSED THROTTLE signal will be open, thus the ecu is not receiving a closed throttle signal and hence high idle, replace the TPS (not dear) set up and correct tick over will be restored.

One tip though, any adjustment or alterations you have made to correct the problem will need restoring to previous settings.
