Whilst driving North on M1, (J12-13@70mph), I suddenly smell coolant and the temp rises from 50% to 90% full scale. I quickly, and safely, pull over onto the hard shoulder and roll to a stop. Temp drops to 75% full scale but I switch off anyway.

Pop the bonnet and the place is covered in coolant. I call the RAC who arrive in 30 mins and clearly they cannot do anything, its not the top hose and so we recon it the bottom hose. They call out a flat bed and get me home.

So I check out the bottom hose and its OK so it rad out time. Well this is the first time for me and it took 1 hour - I recon it should be a 15 minute job next time.

So what was wrong? Compare the two pics below:

This looks OK...

This does not ...

Speak to MAC, he'll put you in touch with the best Rad suppliers this side of the pond!

:D

Matty.

Out of interest has anyone else had the side tanks on the radiator split on them? The rad is 12 years old so was it an age problem or possibly someting else?

What surprised me was that I would have thought that the radiator cap pressure release valve should have prevented too high a pressure! In which case it must just have been fatigue. As I said ho hum.

It's just age!

I went to get a connector cleaned up at Zedworld, If I knew what it was I would have done it myself but after hooking up the ConZult all became clear, whilst leaning over the lights to clean the connection (temp sensor!) we both noticed a hissing sound.

The rad had split on the right hand side under the bleed screw, it had just got old and decided enough was enough.

Hence all the new stuff going on my Z.

Phone Jeff @ Zedworld and he'll give you some advice, as he's doing mine at the moment it will be fresh in his mind!! :D

Matty.

P.S. Rad's are a shitter when they go.........Boooooo
