It never worked for me, still it works for some people.

I'd see what Roy thinks.

Steroids probably. That doesn't mean his training theories were wrong.

Read his tributes and you may have a different opinion.

Better training methods will work irrespective of steroid use. The steroids may damage your health like eating lots of fatty food, but the better training methods will still work (albeit artificially enhanced).

Late?

I thought he would be able to run fast with all that pharmaceutical assistance and not ever be late.

This is the 2nd time today, but ill retreive me coat once more ;)

Its crap.

He thought it was wonderful but then again he was addicted to amphetamines for the majority of his life and was certified as mad by the LA Health Authorities on 2 occcasions!

In order to gain mass (Nelson, quiet) you consume more calories than you expend.

In order to use those nutrients to build that mass as muscle tissue you must exert trauma to temporary failure on those muscle fibres so that they have to adapt by growing in size. Now if you think you can honestly achieve that in 1 or 2 sets then great, I couldnt, no way. He last training method consisted of 1 rep for 1 set per bodypart!

Go figure?

AND the crucial bit, you must strive to do this everytime you work out, 4 days a week, 52 weeks a year.

You must sleep at least 8 hours a night.

All supplements (except for Creatine) are a waste of money and time. good solid food is much, much better. This is a billion dollar industry, remember that. You may laugh at the silly women who buy the latest pill to turn them from a size 20 to a size 12, but we are no different.

AND if you want to look like Mr Mentzer and most other physiques in Magazines you MUST take steroids! And no, they only make about a 5% difference to you physique you still have to do everything else 100%. And no, their not as bad as the media make out BUT they are drugs and as such have negative side effects. Oh and he died of heart related condidtions! Anyone for a line!

;) :D

I'll read the book then decide 4 myself ;)

Many 'fit/healthy' people have heart attacks around 50 yrs of age, so his death is not wholly surprising.

He did challenge the theories of the day, which is to be admired, as he could have made more money by going along with the big companies bull$hit about training and miracle supplements etc.

I ahve made some good gains from 'abbreviated' training programs, but not as abbreviated as 1 rep or 1 set ! I find 2 heavy sets done to failure can easily be enough to stimulate growth. I have read tho that you need a few sets and reps to activate a majority of the muscle fibres in a muscle.

So the way I work is to go as heavy as poss. on first set, then drop down for next set - just enough to allow me to complete reps in strict style. Called running the rack if u use dumbbells. Sometimes I remove weight in the middle of a set.

I agree with his belief that 4-7 days is needed for full recovery from a heavy workout. Too many train too long and too often, resulting in sticking points and little/no progress IMHO. I only train about once a week.

wrt MADNESS - how would you spot a madman in LA ???!!!

I've just started training again after Christmas & I've put 9lbs of weight on. Not sure how much of that is fat though.

I drink 4-6, (sometimes more) pints of semi skimmed milk a day on top of what I normally eat, is this a good idea? I figured that milk would contain eveything you need to grow.

semi-skimmed milk is good I reckon, but you are prolly taking too much - but depends on what other food ure eatin' ;)

don't overtrain - lift as heavy as you can but don't overstrain/lose quality of exercise style. Don't bounce wiehgts or throw them. Slow/steady reps with top effort.

I can spend 1-1.5 hours in the gymj, but 80% of the time I'm waiting between heavy sets. Then I rest for about a week. Progress continues ;) 1 day I may look like BigRoy ;) :D OR Macca (heaven forbid) :D :D

to much Milk isn't good for you, it causes water retention and has been linked to infertility and diabetes.

I was ill just before christmas and dropped to 140lbs, I now am just hitting 158lbs, I still look like a skinny **** though :)

1hour a week in the gym? This is my current routine

1. Back

2. Chest and Bi's

3. Triceps and shoulders

4. Legs and adominal

5. Chest and Bis

6. Abdominal

7. off

It doesnt take 7 days for every muscle group to recover, I think it takes your back 108hour to fully recover and your bicpes only 48hours, but you will work out biceps a tad when doing back due to nature of exercise.

yes, I have never liked training different muscle groups on different days, because most exercises use several different muscle groups.

The thing to remember different programs work for different people, light sets, heavy sets, few sets or multiple sets. We are all different and respond in a different way to lifting weights.

I personally prefer going with a lighter weight but for more reps and really feeling the burn. It just works for me. I would much rather go to failure with 30 lighter reps than say, 5 heavy ones. I might chuck in a heavy day every now and then though.

But the most important thing is there is never ANY SUBSTITUTE for hard work.

Well I personally don't do heavy weights because it mean that I will loose speed. I train with light weights and squeeze as much in as possible. Once I get down to the weight I want to be. I'll start doing some heavy weights.

I'm not sure if there is something wrong with me, but I work really hard in the gym and 9/10 times after a work out I feel sick. Is this natural ?, After a banana and a few glasses of water I feel ok.

if u want size/strength, you gotta go heavy. I can do overhead presses with >60lb dumbbells as an example - lateral raises starting with 40-pounders. barbell curls with >60kg.

many over-emphasie that the weight is not important, but the basis of weights is lifting weight to get strong. Progressively.

Nelson, do you not find the extra mass an issue?

I know its going to the extreme for an example, but look at The World's Strongest Man, they are mostly fat b4stards and not something I aspire to in the slightest. I am a size I am happy with so going to failure with lighter weights is good for me. My bench presses etc are still increasng so I am not sacrificing any strength gains. As I said before, everyone is different and have different goals and aims.

Nelson >60kg barbell curls !!.

That's quite good IMO.

You must have some arms on you mate, what size Biceps you got ?

Someone mention arms?
