Did I read somewhere not to use synthetic brake fluid?

I have to bleed mine and will replace all of it.

Thanks.

I dont know did you read it? I can't tell what you read and what you didn't ;)

I would like to say though, DOT 5.1 fluid is now said to be the most advanced. However, all the racing spec expensive fluids are DOT 4.

Stuart

When I wanted to put Dot5 in my bike I was told that it was unsafe as it caused any dot4 left in the pipes to solidify and it would rot the seals.

I spoke to the top boy at EBC and he told me this was *****x, I flushed the pipes and put the dot5 in and it was fine.

I did have a guy who serviced it refuse to take it for a test run as there was dot5 in the brake lines tho

James;

Dot 4 - fine if you use the car mostly on the road, perfectly safe, 99% of the time mixes fine with any remnants (it'll state clearly on the bottle if it does or doesn't).

Dot 5 - If I recall, it doesn't mix with old fluids so needs flushing with Dot 5 before filling. Very corrosive, and has a tendency to rot seals (at least, used to).

Dot 5.1 - more akin to Dot 4 than Dot 5. Perfectly safe in a road car, usually mixes ok with remnants, and easily adequate unless you're building a track-only car.

Dot 5 (not 5.1) is also highly hygroscopic (moreso than standard brake fluid), so you'll be replacing it ever 12 months...

What about DOT 4.1 ?

I used that, can't remember the full description, but made by Castrol abd fully backward compatible with all fluids and available from Halford for about £8 per litre.

Hmm.. Maybe I meant 4.1.. No.. I'm sure I meant 5.1..

Darnit Andy, you've got me doubting myself now :D

It was definitely 5.1 I meant.. :)

However - Castrol Response Synthetic looks quite good, DOT 4, but formulated to exceed specs as an alternative to Dot 5.1 - compatible with all Dot 3, 4 and 5.1 fluids, and about £9 a litre from Demon Tweeks...

Yup, that's the stuff I used.

AY3388 sells the Castrol Brake Fluid at about £20 a litre. Normally retails at £35-£40. Some people said they can feel the difference in braking using this stuff.

Yeah Andy, thats what I've just bought for £9 at Halfords.

Dot 5.1 is previously the highest rated but this Dot 4.1 Castrol Response stuff is said to exceed the 5.1 specs and has a higher boiling point so sounds good to me.

Will be putting it in my new Brembos and braided hoses so I will probably not notice the difference the fluid alone makes!

Automec.5 silocone for me,been in for two years and is real good stuff;)

Automec's Silicone Brake Fluid repels moisture,so unlike standard polyglycol brake fluid,it never needs changing.

Rust and corrosion are inhibited because moisture is kept out of the system, and the high boiling point of 260c (500f) is maintained throughout the life of the product, ensuring consistent,long-term,safe performance.

Conforms to the highest acknowledged standards, the US Dept of transportation (DOT)5 standard as well as the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 116 and US Military Standard MIL B46176 and has been standard issue in US Military vehicles for over 15 years.
