wheel weights must add unwanted weight to your car, is it possible to machine out the required weight on the opposite side of the wheel rim to ballance your wheels?

No because its not really the wheel that is out of balance, its the tyre. So every time you have new tyres, you will need to machine a different part of the wheel untill you cut all the wheel away.

My wheels have never needed balancing, they seem to stay upright because they are bolted to the car.

When I stagger home from the pub, p1ssed as a fart, straying all over the place and sometimes into the road-how about I carry some wheel weights in my pocket to balance myself up thus avoiding getting run over?

no, chris - never bolt your wheels to the car (unless its a landrover & its the spare wheel were talking about). they should always be bolted (nutted in our case??) to the hub.
