Looking to buy a radar detector. What ones are the best? Also i am going to florida for three weeks, is it cheaper to buy in America?

Featured Replies

Too right! I bought one for $50 and one of similar spec in the UK cost £150.

However they are illegal in some states, like Virginia so I had to make a 1 hour trip north to Maryland to get mine.

I got a Valentine One in the states several years ago. £240 vs the £550 or so wanted by Demon Tweeks

Works very very well and saved my bacon a couple of times but beware that they only deliver to the US. So if it goes wrong and need repairing you are stuffed unless you have contacts in the US that they can mail it to.

Nice touch is that you can upgrade for much less than cost of a new one if additinal bands added, etc.

Final downside is that it's ugly as hell. Looks like a spray painted fag packet

i have a bell radar euro 550

- it's supposed to be one of the best and it certainly works well for me.

Regs,

Alex

Most US ones wont work on the UK as the US uses X band mostly while the UK doesnt use it and uses K and Ka mostly.

X-band is widely used in communications equipment, petrol stations and supermaket sliding doors. If you get a cheapo detector (like mine  ) it is constantly bleeping

I have a bell 550 aswell, you can set it to detect what bands you want or delete them for less interference from traffic lights and automatic doors. Can also set different frequencies if you wanna use it in europe. It detects fixed gatso's pretty well too. They're about £350 to 400 now i think.

The newer Valentine One covers European bands although you have to specifically turn these bands on

Cheers guys, I am trying to find some shops in the florida area online so that i can see just what kind of a price difference there is. Has anyone bought a road angel? as there has been a lot of publicity about them. The Valentine one seems like a good piece of kit though. Will have a search and see what i can find. Will post any results soon!

Think you might struggle to find the Bel 550 in the states as it was designed for the Eurine market. It was based on the 990 though (which works a treat :D ). The 990 has all the bands that the 550 does, plus the yank ones. They're all switchable though so I get no more false alarms than my mate's 550.

If you do get one I'll dredge out the list of bands want to turn off !
