I just took my car to a metal polishers about 8 miles away, for a quote on doing the entire top of the engine! There i was waiting for "200 quid mate" and the bloke turned to me and said "80 quid for that!!!!!!!" Well chuffed. However i have to take them off myself! Is it easy to remove the inlet manifolds? Do they come apart in 2 sections?? Does anyone know any other bits it might be worth me takimg off and polishing also? Thanks for any help -

Mike

It'll probably cost more than £100 in gaskets and rubber hoses to put it back and it's a pain of a job to do.

Unless you're quite mechanically minded, or have a lot of time spare, don't even contemplate taking the upper inlet manifold off.

To remove it you'll need to;

Unbolt it (8 bolts, if I recall correctly).

Remove the waterlines from the underside - there's quite a lot, all 8mm rubber, and probably welded solid to the pipes so you'll end up cutting them.

Obviously remove all the petrol hose etc from the top.

Remove the PCV hoses (again, rubber, but most likely hard with age & heat)

Remove all the wiring etc.

Lift the plenum off.

Refitting will definitely require a new upper intake gasket (not expensive), and almost certainly require new PCV hoses (now is a good time to replace the PCV's anyway), water hoses if you choose to reinstall them (I bypassed mine - that's a whole nother argument), and you'll probably want some new fuel hose too.

Took me probably two to three days work the first time I did it, and I think I could do it in about four hours now.

Thanks for your information and help guys!! I am gutted now!!!!!!! Not going to bother any more!! Good job i posted on here as my mate reckoned we could do it in 2 hours tomorrow afternoon, with no new gaskets or anything! Im certainly not listening to that divvy again!!

Cheers

You could probably rip the upper intake off in 2hrs if you're very good.. But the gasket will definitely die (some cars and some gaskets would survive, but unfortunately the lower intake gasket on the Z has a rubber ring around each tract, which basically glues the gasket to the intake with the heat - when you remove the intake it will almost certainly tear in one or more places.. I think mine came off in about 10 bits, leaving a good few bits I had to scrape off with a gasket scraper (otherwise known as a butter knife :))..)

In fact, here's a link to a tech article which includes removing the intake (it's actually an injector installation article);

Here's what you need to do.

1) Get your mate to pop over to your place.

2) When he arrives open the door smile and.............................

................Punch the nutter square on the jaw for being such a pleb. He would have put your car out of action for a good few weeks.

Disclaimer: I'm sure your mate is actually a nice bloke so please take this as Jest. I don't encourange punching people in the mouth very often ;).

I'm glad you confirmed that as a joke or it may have been moved to fight club ;)

Well posted :D

cant i just have go with a dremmel?? Or a palm sander?

that's what a friend in the states did. He said you have to be very careful with the Dremel cos you'll get flat spots. He used a palm sander for most of it. Once you've flattened it then polish it with a polishing mop. I say some pictures of the water pipes he did and it looked quite good.

Vijay

tube of autosol

couple hours rubbing

should look good

Im gonna go with the autosol i think! I have a palmsander too, which i managed to do the frame on my bike with, and that looked mental. Thanks for all the help - i told my mate exactly what i thought of his suggestion today ( inserting a few choice words into the sentence) !! He thought it was a ten min job!! Never listening to him again!

Thanks again boyz
