Abs

Yesterday a stupid kid on a bike decided to play chicken with me and an on-coming car, the kid saw us and still swerved across the road then went across the front of me a few feet in front of my bumper!

Now either my brakes are really, really good (Unlikely) or my ABS is faulty because there was a bit of tyre sqealing and no "thumping" through the brake pedal.

I was only doing about 20mph but it's my understanding ABS stops the wheels locking up, so no sqealing tyres when slamming on.

Is my ABS non functioning (The ABS light hasn't come on)? Does ABS only work at certain speeds (doubt it)? or can you still lock up sometimes with ABS?

In my previous cars ABS stopped the car skidding at any speed.

The ABS detects it when its locked up, so it has to lock up for a fraction of a second before it knows it.

The pedle wont move. Nissan spent a lot of time and money developing it so there is no rubbling or shudder through the ABS when its activated.

I know that the ABS sensors dont work at low speeds, less then 10mph or so.

Cheers mate, that explains a lot :D

Why did Nissan spend lots of time and money making sure the pedal doesn't vibrate?

It's handy to know it works and that you can still control the car.

Couldn't they have spent the money on something more useful like better brakes in the first place.

Are the stock brakes 4 pots?

Some people say that the vibration is off putting, and some people will take the foot off the pedel in shock of what it felt like, thinking there is something wrong.

You can tell when it activates, it sounds like dripping bricks. If you skidded, the ABS probably just activated just once and wasnt needed again, so the ABS noise was hidden in the little screech.

When it rains again, make the wheels lock up so you know what it is like.

The brakes dont forget are now 10 years old or so, which means that the servo, master cylinder and all the connections and pipes are 1 years old. If you got into a 2000 spec 300ZX, the brakes would probably be fantastic or at least better than what they are now.

Cool, thanks mate :D
