Having just bought my first 300zx, (import, non turbo) 1992 with 53,000 miles, I am wondering when it would be due for its first cam belt change (assuming it has not had one) and what would be an average cost.

Thanks

John

According to the 'sticker' when I got my ZXTT the cam belt had been done 25,000km before I bought it. It is supposed to be changed at 60,000miles IIRC

I decided to play safe and change it anyway. The original belts from Nissan (you might as well do them all at the same time) came to about £90 (I think the cam belt on its own was about £40)

I asked on here and was pointed to a garage close to me who did the change over for £250 labour (but this also included 6 spark plugs, cleaning the throttle bodies, and a oil & filter change with Mobil 1 Motorsport)

Good luck!

the school of thought is that you should do the water pump, oil seals and inlet water hoses at the same time.

If you are halfway mechanically adept, it is possible to do it yourself

Thanks for your replies.

Jock, is a cam belt change something that could be done in a weekend? I am reasonably mechanically inclined (I rebuilt a 1968 Corvette engine...but back then there were not miles of pollution equipment and gizmos to contend with.)

John

I did mine in a weekend, there are a couple of sites which give a good idea of whats going on

cambelt guide

Dont take them as gospel, but they are close enough.

Make sure you have a set of long reach Hex (allen) keys:D

Thanks Jock,

I may attempt it myself after I carefully read the instructions

Its always a good idea to get a cambelt change if you don't know the history.

I agree Geoff, I bought the 300ZX from a dealer, but the previous owners name is still on the vehicle registration. I have sent a letter off today to him asking him if he ever had the cam belt changed. I fugure he would have nothing to gain by lying, so if he says its been changed, it should be good enough.

John

If you decide to give it a go i've got most of the kit, cambelt, aux belts, seals etc, which i ordered from america but never got round to using.

Robtor, will your parts fit a Japanese 1992 non turbo (auto box) car ?

How much do you want for them ?
