Does anyone know the law on removing the cats, I've just had it done on a 92 import (1 had blown) and after reading earlier posts and scouring the net on law, I'm still not sure. My early understanding on imports was pre 93 was ok to remove without MOT problems as you were allowed an extra few % on emissions.

Alright mate.

Always wondered about this too, especially when i was looking at getting my Z, until i found out that Pre 'K' plate cars only have a visual check done on them if they have cats.

Anything younger than that age will have a full CAT emisions test, well thats what the MOT Man said when i had my Z done a month back, i got a 91 H import so its ok.

Beware the turbos tho, my right side one has blown the rear main oil seal, costing me over two grand to put right, but i am getting hybrids, so i cant wait...

Good luck

Paul

I don't think that's quite right. Paul C's an mot tester and no doubt he'll inform us of the correct answer.

Saying that im pretty sure a Z shouldn't have the usual cat test unless you're lucky enough to own a 95 or newer, as they're not listed on the database of cars. Means usually a decatted Z is fine.

Contrary to common belief, there is no part of an emmisions test where you visually check the cats are there either.

A far as I know from when I looked into this a few years back, it is not illegal to remove the cats on any car previous to 96. However between August 92 and 96 it must be able to pass the cat test as done by a DOT testing station. This is achievable without cats providing your engine is in good nick and a bit of tweeking here and there. If your car is pre August 92 all Z's should pass without cats as long as they are not fooked. I have also heard that the Z is not on the DOT database for the current MOT gas test, therforewhen it is tested it only has to comply to a default test specification (3.5% CO and 1000ppm HC (From memory)) which again should pose no problems at all. To sum up, if your Z is pre Aug 92 you should have no problems now or in the future with no cats. Later cars should be OK now but may have problems in the future with beter database and thus harsher gas specs. Decat is very good for power and sounds better too just beware of premature leaking of turbo oil seals (smoke).

Last September I had my wifes Eunos 93 MOTed which was catless. (Well, it did need a lager bore exhuast after I replaced the whole induction system and it helped a lot). Anyway, passed the MOT no probs but I was reluctant to ask further incase they missed it.

Pre 1992 you can remove the cats legally

After 1992 you cant.

Well mines a 92 NA so I hope its ok the the new system is fantastic.

Hope I got the pics right, tried before and no luck....

you must hrough some toothbrushes. Yhat is p[ossibly the cleanest underside I have ever seen:D

Does anyone know what you do with the left over connections after de-catting, I have plugged the egr valves at the rubber end but what about the exhaust temperature plugs that are right in the cat, what do you do with these ?

All help greatly appreciated.

With mine, they were just earthed out and tied out the way thus having no affect on the dash light. i.e the light still comes on with the ignition then goes off as normal... presto 2minute job.

The connections are for the cat temperature sensors. Obviously test pipes have no cats so there is no where to put them

I just cut the cat temp sensors off, am planning at some point to follow them and find a plug/connection and do it properly.

As it stands I get no warning light etc, I can only imagine you would get a warning light if you took a blowtorch to them :)

Well Well, others do exist. I thought I was the only owner in the UK and all these postings a figment of my imagination... I've not seen another yet (are they all cloked). Even driving down to Southampton and back last week not a one...

Nice to hear.... cheers. Do you drive into chester much?

from 01/08/92 same day mine was first registered - legally you must have em. Reality is they may not check on MOT as the zed may not be listed in the cat database.

You are even supposed to tell your insurer about this too.

On that clean underside shot - is that 3 boxes on each side? looks like 2 each side upwards of the diff! must be quiet?

Mine only has the Apexi cans on the end of the 3" plumbing with nothin else - hence the sound / noise depending on your point of view

Mine was registered in Japan Mar92, here May03 so I guess I'm ok and unlikely to be on the register.

Yep, 3 each side in all with 2 back fron diff. Not as quiet as before but then I didn;t want too much... still gives off a nice rumble though.

well done Rob, you get the "I was listening last time" award :D

95 on is a default cat test for MOT purposes, pre 95 & there has to be an exact match in the emissions database (& there isnt) or you do a non cat test.

now this is for MOT only - how the law stands on removing cats i dont know.

Do you not remember that the police started to do on the spot emissons test with a £100-£500 fine (depending on how bad it was) for people whos emissions where to high. Didnt last long as all the people who took it to court stated that to test the emissions a specialist machine costing thousands has to be used and is not a thing that people can check themselves.

Personally I think its was just a ploy for police to get more money.

yes, i know. im not talking about emmission tests, as the roadside ones have to conform to the same limits as the MOT.

im talking about the physical removal of the cats

thanks for the info guys, tucked them up under the chassis and left the egr to atmosphere.
