I'm converting to a manual anyway but while my auto box is out and I have lots of time to do it, is it possible to repair myself?

It started slipping in third, then in second on full throttle.

It got worse until there was no drive in third - it just revved.

Changes all occured as normal though.

ATF was very black and smelled burnt.

Lasted 18 months with 400ish BHP but eventually said NOOOO! :D

Is this just the clutches/brake bands whatever they are and are they "easy" to change?

Take a look here to see if you fancy it ;)

its quite a big job, & to be honest, if your asking how to replace steering rack gaiters i wouldnt bother!! ;) :D

but then, if you just want to strip it to see if you can do it & have a manual box - go for it!! its the only way to learn!!

LOL I knew how to change the gaitors I just wanted some tips on any easy ways - you can hardly go wrong with them ;)

And yes it's more to see if I can do it seeing as by next weekend I'll have finished pulling my engine and box I thought I might just have a go.

The box is not really worth anything and I have a manual on the way so why not :D

So what parts are likely to need replacing with this type of fault?

TBH Chris, there is not many garages that would take that job on,let alone an IT bod!

I'll go into competition with SE and sell the ChrisC Wacky Races Le Mans Rebuild - good for 24 hours use! :D

LOL but mine has been on for 3 years and done 35k,The ChrisC Wacky races Le Mans rebuild may only do 2 hrs;)

I agree with paulc, if it doesnt matter anyway, and you have the time, get amongst it. Worse case scenario: you take a box of cogs down the scrappy as opposed to a gearbox. Best case you learn a new skill and win the admiration of your friends and peers :D

Hehehe, your gearbox rebuilding will probably be as reliable as my ECU recoding - now where is that hex calculator ...

:D

I mainly service and do major engine work on most cars including american which are so easy to work on.....i had never done an auto in my whole life just manual's....until i gave my auto a go in march the manual made it look sophisticated but it was not as hard as actualy getting the box out if that gives you any idea...??i would say give it a go or there are plenty of breakers out there that will sell you a second user box for as little as £395 incuding 30 days or more depending on price warranty....hope this helps..Andy L

Yep, i picked up an autobox for £400 from a breakers ad in the autotrader, I got the impression they were importing scrappers from Japan and they sounded a bit dodgy over the phone but give them their due it was delivered a bit late but works fine 5K. Sorry can't remember the name of the company.

Powermaster, I managed to do the box replacement myself and found it not too difficult so i've got the old box sitting in the garage, you really reckon the overhaul is easier than the removal?

Any special tools required?
