some advice please.

 

when i start her up in the morning the idle sits at 2000 for around 30 seconds and the oil pressure is at about the half way mark and doesn't drop for about a minute of driving. is this usuall?

 

also, ive never driven a car like this before, so is it normal for the rear end to sort of 'skip' sideways when i drive over pot holes and dents in the road surface, or do i need the tracking seen to or something?

The idle will start high as the car warms up then drop to about 850-900 when warm.

 

The oil pressure will also be high when cold but as the car warms up it gets to the ideal level which is between 30 - 60.

 

NEVER drive the car hard or quickly through the gears until the car has warmed up, also when you have finished your journey you need to let the car idle beofre switching off for a bout 2-3 minutes depending on how hard you have driven it (best idea is buy a turbo timer!)

 

It is not normal for the car to 'jump' over pot holes or skip sideways, you must get this checked out. Do a search for the problem and you will find many answers to your problem, see which fits your symptoms.

 

So in conclusion;

 

Let the car warm up before driving the car hard.

 

Let the car idle when journey finished for a couple of minutes.

 

Do a search for the symptoms of back end skip and then get it seen to.

cheers, thought the 'skip' thing was a bit strange! hope it's nothing too serious, have no money after buying the beast! dont know if that has anything to do with it skidding out in the wet so easily (or what seems easily to me as i have no previous experience of rear wheel driven cars!)

car luckily had a turbo timer when i bought it, but thanks for the suggestion.

It could be any of about 5 or 6 things but it's best to do a search as this has come up alot lately.

 

What condition are the rear tyres in?? Are they Z rated (Eagle F1's, Pilot etc..) this could also be a cause as you may have a small amount of grip if the tyres are incorrect!

 

Other option is don't gas it too much round corners in the wet! Z's have a nasty habit of biting you on the ass!

yeah i'll definitely try a search, it's been a well good source of info already and i've only had the car a week!

hopefully it is the tyres as although they're new i dont think theyre good quality! i know what you mean about the wet, i nearly lost the back 3 times today alone!!!

the rating is purely a speed rating, nothing to do with grip ;)

 

id say for your skipping:

 

rear shocks (most people say this cures it)

worn rear hicas links (which mine were & caused a problem)

incorrect rear tracking

crap tyres (as Matty said - tho ignore his z rating bit!)

other worn/damaged components on the suspension

I know about the speed rating but if you put pants tyres on the back end will swing round without much trouble........

 

Timmy Lad had some cheap and chearful tyres on his Z short term.......and they were mucho crapo.......can't remember what they were but they were some really crap rated tyre........so I feel that it's applicable.........

Marshalls bud, they were OK for the money don't get me wrong but I only put them on coz me car was going to PPS and the old ones were slicks. Twas the slicks and having the wheels on back to front and on the wrong sides combined with the wet and racing Mrs T who was driving the Cossie that put me in a hedge. LOL :D

If UK spec and stock wheels check that your wheels are on the right way round and on the correct sides. Even with really cheap new tyres on you shouldn't be losing the back end that regularly unless your driving like an idiot. ;)

 

Secondly if UK spec and the ar5e end is doing a skippy over manhole covers and roadkills then do the handbrake trick. If you've got stock Nelson shocks on they have actuators on top of the shock. U.S. got adjustable suspenders, we got the shocks but no button in the cabin to switch between normal and sport mode. But the actuators are wired into the handbrake.

 

Pull handbrake lever up one click only so the light comes on. This will stiffen up the suspension on the back end. See if this makes a difference. If so it is the shocks. I had this and after new shocks it was a different car. Before that it would crab to the left so violently on the motorway that I would quite frequently think I was gonna do a Fast & Furious Civic stunt under an artic in the middle lane. :D

well i have to confess to driving like a BIT of an idiot, but i havent lost theback end all together it's just stepped out a little (still scares me though!)

mine is a jap spec though, so will the handbrake test work? the tyres and wheels aren't stock either.

Going back to your original question, is your tickover still high after a couple of minutes? Mine was , even warm it was still about 1200, but its easy to adjust - just do a search on here ! I did mine at the wkend , nice at 850 now .

Also , your oil pressure sounds normal, but from what ive heard the stock gauge is pretty crap - not accurate at all, mine reads about 3/4 up gauge from cold and drops to about 1/4 when warm, but can go down to virtually zero when hot ticking over.

the idle drops after a minute or so and once the car is warm its perfect. i know what you mean bout the guages, seem pretty s**t to me too.

could you shed any light on my handling problems? when ever i go over poor surfaces at speed it feels like im gonna bounce into on coming traffic!

Nope you can't do the handbrake trick if it's a Jap import.

 

More than likely the shocks though for the bouncing around.

Reckon its one of the things Paulc mentioned above ^^.

Can u ask someone from here to take a look at it for u? There's some good guys on here, ask if there's anyone in your area with experience , they might be able to look at it and atleast tell u whats wrong.

cheers for the advice, ill do a bounce test for the shocks, see if they're worn. i did a search and it could be the tension bushes, hopefully will be as they'll be cheaper than shocks:D

Id wager on the shox, good news is j spec shox are cheap i got a pair fitted at zedworld for £160. The back end of mine was terrible when i got it but the shox and rebound bushes (which dont add alot to the price) sorted it beautifully.

 

You could jack the back up and give the back wheels a wobble to see if theres any play in em, ive got a bit of play in one of mine and its the upper bush behind the rear wheel, crap description i know, but you can hartdly feel this. When it was the shox it felt like it was going to turn around on pot holes.
