My steering in my 89(G) Z has become very heavy, resulting in an almost dislocated shoulder, due to the fact that I park in a multi-storey car park every day.

The power steering kicked in briefly a few days ago for about a minute, but has generally given up the ghost.

I have taken the car to Western Power steering in Bristol, who are regarded as local experts. They felt that the problem was an electrical problem (including maybe a loose connection) rather than a hydraulic problem.

Nissan (main agents) are going to be having a look at the car on thursday, though they have already advised me that they don't have the appropriate electrical testing equipment.

Anyone had any similar problems and if so, how were they rectified???

Anyone know anyone not too far from Bristol , who could run a test?

If it does need a new rack, where's the cheapest place to get one?

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Does the steering work find some times but the stop working?

Has your speedo been playing up too?

If so, the speed sensor on the gearbox may be broken. This is because the 300ZX has speed sensative power steering. You may not notice but the steering gets harder the faster you go.

If you speed sensor is not working, it causes your power steering to go AWOL.

No, the power steeering has only worked once (very briefly) in the last 3 weeks.

Speedo seems to be ok....

I had this problem where the steering went hard then all of a sudden worked fine again. Took it to jeff at zworld and he found a electrical fault, not sure what but it's been fine ever since.

There is a small electrical connector on the steering rack end, you can see it from the drivers side, as it is exposed to the elements it sometimes corrodes up and as the acting voltage is only 5 volts it does not take much to cause a problem, try uncliping and cleaning/ spraying with contact cleaner or WD 40 and reconnecting, worth a go

Good luck

I have had the problem since getting my car over a 1 and ahalf years now. a few months ago i took it to jeff who couldnt find any specific problems. He cleaned the connections and the steering started working more often, but still intermitant. I have since then played with the wires and bypassed the actual connector, this solved my problem for about 3 weeks. now its heavy again and only light about 2 percent of the time.

If you find someone to fix yours permanantly then please let me know.

cheers mick
