the effective size of your screen depends on how close you sit to it - ie. the size of yuor room. For 'standard' TVs, you get a better quality picture the smaller it is.

sorry big boys i got a 50"sony rear projector KV50 200SX and a 36"sony in the bedroom, soon to be replaced with a 50" plasma

LOL....:D :D

You putting the 36" in the Z then T?

;)

Matty.

Well I've "only" got a 42" Sony rear projection but I do have a **** like a toddlers arm holding an apple ;) :D LOL

I have 32 " widescreen TV, not these KAK rear projection jobbies (man if its not pitch black the image is terrible)

And i agree with Paul, widescreen is where its at , not this old square technology :D:D

oh and i only have small flat in london, so yuou sit about a foot away from the screen :D

SO lets see

32 inches x 1 foot diveded by the subacronem of the achilies tendon stretch area multiplied by the availabe coronea verticle gives you a sum net screen size of around 80 " :D

Don't see the point in a widescreen TV when 95% of the programs are in the good old fashioned square ratio.

My huge standard TV in wide mode is bigger than most widescreen telly's anyway.

Projection TV's can be a bit crap to watch in bright sunlight but I just moved it away from the window and it's fine.

Hardly ever watch the thing during the day anyway.

Err, bollocks! :p

Front projectors need a dark room, rear projectors don't.

LOL - know what you mean - pub projectors are crap - really washed out image. 4:3 screens give better value FM, but I guess a widescreen is better for movies (as long as it's really big). Small widescreens are cack IMHO opinion - like watching something thru a letter box :D

yup, one thing i have notcied though is if you go to your sky tele setup you can specify widescreen and then put tv to auto and when you change channels it automatically put it iether 16x9 (thats actually how your eye views images in the first palce) of 4x3 ratio.

and suprisingly a large ammount of programms show on 16:9

your eyes may view 16 by 9, but the info at the periphery is more hazy and should only be background info. - perhaps this is why TVs were made 4 by 3. Your vision is concentrated into the relatively narrow band straight ahead - otherwise you could talk to someone while facing someone standing next to them. Most of the action in a widescreen should be in the middle portion of the screen I think.

My flash computer mate has the penthouse suit of a converted warehouse in the City. He's got some super dooper projector type thing that comes down from a concealed panel in the ceiling, while at the same time a projector screen reveals itself from behind a panel in the wall. The screen must be about 6-7 feet wide!

The sound is incredible too, with concealed speakers and subs all over the place. Oh, the walls are at least three feet thick, so you can have it AS LOUD AS YOU LIKE!!!!:D

The reason TVs were designed as 4:3 is because that was the format of films at the time - http://www.thedigitalbits.com/articles/anamorphic/aspectratios/widescreenorama.html

yeah, probably. nothing to do with the cost of producing widescreens at the time then!!??

Like I said, small widescreens are crap. Olny wiht the advent of large screens has widescreen been a sensible proposition. With a small widescreen, the small height of the picture menas you are viewing a smaller picture in real terms.
