I'm pretty confident I can outrun his Supra!

If he gets me on foot, it may be a different matter!

Maybe you guys can clear this up then... a US company our company do a lot of business with has a huge plasma screen in their viewing room. But talking to them recently, one of their guys said the screens only last a few years before they burn out. Is this true? Did the bloke in the shop tell you this?

Nothing to do with jealousy, honest. I'm happy with my Nokia widescreen (CRT)... yeah, I got it before widescreen started getting popular, back when Nokia used to sponser that movie prog Johnny Vaughn did on C4.

Mine's a rear projector. One of the first things I did was to alter the settings, as from the factory the contrast and colour (as far as I remember) were set way too high to make them look good in shop displays. If you leave them like that, there's a chance you'll burn a static image into the screen.

I think the same applies to plasmas. I know a lot of plasmas that were used in company foyers to display company logos or stock market tickers have ended up knackered in a fairly short space of time.

Whether that's due to problems with the technology, or just failure to alter the factory settings, I don't know.

Thing with Plasma screens, they work simalar to LCD screens, but use gas instead of liquid. If so its hard to get screen burn on them as if you do, leave the screen off for a few days will clear it. Thats what happens to my LCD.

I remember on my Mega Drive it said never play it on a rear projector, as pausing the game could cause screen burn as the colours are more intense on a computer game over anologue TV.

Dave at the time I bought my 36" it was the largest tubed TV available,I find with rear projection you have to watch the TV straight on,as your picture gets weaker from side veiws?

Back to Plasma I looked at these 5 years ago,at that time the price was 10k and could not see I was getting any value for money,But they have come down in price since then.

Mine cost about £1800 around 2 years ago. Plasmas are still not good value in my opinion, although a lot better value than when they were 10k!

My rear projector is a bit worse if you watch it off centre, but not too bad at all. It does make a big difference if you watch it from either too high or too low though (gets quite dark), but it's big enough that that isn't much of a problem! :D

LCD does have the advantage over plasma, as plasma apparently does suffer burn-in, often very quickly (http://www.plasmatvbuyingguide.com/plasmatvreviews/plasma-vs-lcd.html) which is why it's so bad that channels have permanent on-screen logos or red dots. I hope that someone ends up suing the TV broadcasters for damage to TVs - it's not as if they haven't been warned!

Er... my understanding of plasma, and it's really too late for me to be talking about this... is that a plasma cell actually generates light (and gets hot) whereas LCD simply polarises to either show the backlight or block it. CRT projection you expect to get a burnt in image because the phosphor wears, but LCD projection...? Hm.

If I add all my TVs together I get a ma-hoosive one. :D But that probably doesn't count..... :D

32" widescreen. we are talking widescreen tv's here & not those funny old fashion square ones arnt we?!?! :D :p

96" of pure widescreen!!

(after I put my add on to the front of my 36" widescreen)

Projected onto the white plastered wall, superb for PS2 and DVD's, top quality picture and with the 5.1 surround sound it's amazing!
