Hello. Does anyone know what 6,000rpm in 5th gear equates to in Kph? Not that I was going that speed or anything :)

 

Also, I got a new clutch about 2000k's ago and since then my gearbox has been really loud, except for 3rd gear. It sounds like there's nothing between me and the spinning gears but 3rd sounds all nice and quiet (can't hear anything). If that makes sense. It doesn't crunch or anything. hmmm...?

Depends on the size of your wheels and if your car has been chipped;)

Really? I would of thought that it would be the same unless you changed gearbox ratios. I've got 18" wheels but a very low profile so I guess the overall diameter would be the same.

In a manual it's around the 140mph mark or 225 khm.

Makes perfect sense. When they reattached the gear lever they didn't connect the rubber boots properly. When the car is in third it's the center of the shifter and it puts pressure on the boots.

Try a little test, in 2nd or forth when you hear transmittion noise, press the front of the lever gator to see if it stops the noise, if so you need to link your boots back together.

This is the boot that is misplaced. The upper boot connects over this one.

Wow, you're a champion. I had a look at these recently when I was installing my stereo. I didn't know how they were meant to sit but they were loose. Thanks heaps.

Also, do you know what the top speed of a 300 is? I wanna know how fast I can go :D At 6,000 the car was still pulling.

About 248kph @6000rpm - and if I had me anorak on I might make an adjustment for tyre diameter increase due to centrifugal force which would mean faster still!

 

On your private airstrip of course

 

18" with 265/35 mean about 2.5% higher gearing I fink

 

So instead of 25.7mph per 1000rpm you get 26.34

 

Automatic is geared even higher in OD locked up.

I've got a 5zigen exhaust. I don't think my other mods count but i'll mention them anyway:D Clutch, Wheels, Harder suspension, Blue/Grey leather interior. Well actually the interior makes the ladies faster :D

This is a link to a web site giving the basic mathematical determination to top speeds, as you'll see there are many variables.

 

So based on this if you had a long enough flat straight road with the car in top condition and tune and the 155mph limiter was removed then the 300ZX TT with 300HP would achieve about 166mph

and the auto with 280HP would achieve 158mph.

Your speedo may show higher but speedo's (not the swimwear) is only calabrated to 70mph - and with age these get more and more out of true.

 

Also remember if fitting larger rims with a larger diamater then the problem is at say 100mph the engine is producing less power than a stock car and there will be a critical point where the larger wheeled car will not be able to go as fast as a car with stock smaller wheels all this is due to the required power.

 

Remember for high top speed a high power figure is required, for quick acceleration a high torque figure is required. For petrol cars high torque comes with high power but diesel's rely soly on torque to get the job done and that is why at the moment the fastest production Diesel is an Alpina D10 163mph with a whopping 390lbf and yet makes do with only 230bhp........petrol car may just break the 145mph.

Hi guys

My name is Geoff and i have recently bought a Japanese 300ZX Auto non turbo. Its a 1990 model,but in exceptional condition. I took it on a long trip the other day and tried it out,only for the car to die on me just past the 180kph mark. I was informed by a friend that these vehicles from Japan, have a speed limiter? Please if there is anyone out there who can help explain how this can be removed .I would really appreciate it guys.

Welcome, you've dug up a very old post here. Do a search on speed limiter, there are many posts on removing it.
