Alright people :)

Coming home in the p1ssing rain after a no-go at Santa Pod, I noticed my speedo wasn't working  - it was sitting at zero. It then perked up later on and was fine for the rest of the journey. I put it down to big puddles spashing on some electrical connectors somewhere  . Does this sound likely?

Yesterday though it was nice and dry and took the zed out. The speedo didn't work again :(, I pulled into a petrol station to fill up and when I started up again the "Power" light on the dash *flashed* 3 or 4 times  .

Turned the ignition off, and on again - same flashing again   . Anyway I set off and the speedo was working fine. No change in performance, autobox etc for the rest of the journey. V strange - whats going on??? Is the flashing some sort of autobox warning signal?

Incidentally - my trip was to pick up a set of 4 car mats for the Zed :D Black, RHD ;) with "300ZX" in red stitching on the front two - sweet!! All for a bargain £15 from an ad in the local paper. Well chuffed!!

Any help/advice on the electrical gremlins would be much appreciated :)

Cheers

Pete

The 300ZX mats where only available on the 1990 and early 1991 300ZXs. After that they just had Z on them. I still have the original 300ZX mats too. :D

The problem you have is most probably the speed sensor (About £100 from Nissan). The problem usually occurs with the power steering playing havoc too. The power light will flash with a speed sensor failure.

Will an ECU Diag show a speed sensor error?

Pete, its deffo the speed sensor id say, but it may just be a wire on it thats loose, i found that one of mine had touched the ehaust and nearly knackered the wire which made the speedo intermittant.

The speed sensor is to the drivers side of the bottom of the auto box (from underneath) its further back than one would think, think its the only part I havent took a picture of!:(

Cheers boys :D - it had a new speed sensor a few months back so it must be a wire loose  .

Can I use a multimeter anywhere to test the speed sensor cos my ramps are designed for normal cars ;) or will I have to get some axle stands pronto?

Yep the steering did go heavy :)

Cheers again

Pete, if you park on a kirb and drive onto a couple of bits of wood, you should be able to get under, then again being my size i bearley need to jack the car up to get under it!!!

Your welcome to pop up to mine if you want to get it up on axle stands, im considering taking mine apart this weekend anyway.

Cheers Berks - that looks a bit open to the elements so maybe it is the water that sent it doolalee ;)

Check the wiring around the sensor. It tends to go brittle because of the heat from the zorst`s. Mine did anyway.:(
