well cars been happily running sweet since october 2002, bit of a power steering leak but nothing major,

today however on the way to work the temp guage was hapily sat on halfway as per usual then sudden rockets up towares H and steam coming out the bonnet at the traffic lights, i got to work 2 minutes from when steam appeared so just coasted there,

flips bonnet and getting this hissing sound coming from were the 2 water pipes go into the block, couldnt see it leaking as the cam cover protrudes over the pipes, but rusty water (not alot tho) had sprayed around that area just behind coolant temp sensors, is there a gasket where the alloy pipes join the block, well i filled it up with water took 5 liters at dinner time, comes out of work and none had leaked on to the floor, drove home and temp stayed centre all the way, pulls up, lifts bonnet and i can hear the same hissing from the same area but cant see steam or water,

i have notice the water filler on the radiator seems to have a rusty residue on it when topping it up

but heater works so i take it water is ciculating, i just cant see where its hissing from are the alloy pipes cast to the block or mated with a gasket,

any help appreciated, is it safe to drive solong as i keep it topped up

NO get is sorted or you could end up paying £££££££££ for head work.

If it is a pipe at the back of the engine it could be the matrix feed.

If it is around the middle of the engine it is one of the Turbo water by-pass hoses.

if its any help the water had sprayed just behind where the arrow is pointing in this picture whre the 2 alloy pipes go under the cam cover,

ill try get it looked at but theres not many specialist garages around here, zedworld is quite a treck and as u say its not worth blowing something up, the oil seems find and its not loosing water unless its hot.

Agree with Mac defo the inlet pipes, not an expensive or a hard job but costly if left.

Beermonster please do not leave it or it will end in tears.

If you fancy a go at it yourself can let you know how to do it.

If it is its either water pump or the pipes that attach to it, but i believe these to be behind it so either way its a take it apart job:(

Absolute doddle to fix. Obtain the two short water hoses that attach the top metal coolant pipe to the heads. Undo the 3 allen bolts holding the top metal hose to the engine (2 at the top, 1 at the bottom). Slide back the clips that attach the hoses to this top metal pipe behind it. Pull the metal pipe off - be carefull you don't launch it through your radiator though ;) Replace the 2 rubber hoses. Clean mating surfaces and apply liquid gasket. Re-assemble.

This should cure your problem - the two rubber hoses aren't really up to the job and swell and eventually crack...

thanks for all the help, its reasuring its not to big a job, i take it your on about rubber hoses rather than the alloy ones, the two big fat ones that joing these at the front are fine, is there smaller hose were i cant see under the cam cover, my might is a good mechanic and works for mandellas so i'd let him do it in his own time rather than pay there prices.

Yep the rubber hoses are behind that top metal hose - they join it to the heads....

Do not round one of the internal hex bolts though, they are sometimes a bit tight!

Duff, you'd forgotten about that one hadn't you - I had!

Tim :D

LOL, only if someone's been there before ;)

I wsn't accusing you m8, but that little f'ker was as tight as a nun's...

Here's a pic of the offending hoses...
