I'm here as I am in need of a 300ZX Turbo. JUst want a bit of advice from all your knowledge is it worth the extra for a manual over the auto? What realistic MPG can I expect (I'm guessing 15mpg).

 

Insurance I'm 24 (Zero no claims and 1 claim no points or convictions) and have had a quote of £1050 TPFT from Elephant.co.uk if your a member here is there an insurance Co who give a lower premium than what I have there.

 

I'm looking to spend between £3k and £4.5k ideally I'd like airbags but I think that is too little money for a 1994+ model. Did the Z TT come with side impact bars?

 

Lastly on this post for tuning the 300ZX TT Manual whats the options and will I get it to 180mph for my Germany trips?

You're really looking at around 18mpg maybe a bit more on long journeys, but tbh for 3-4.5k you'll get a crap Z. You wanna be spending 5.5k+ for a decent one. As for tuning, how much do you wanna spend ;) Derestriced you'll easily hit 180 :D

I'm guessing that milage is an issue on these high performance cars (Suppose I should be aiming for 50k)

 

Are there any common problems with milage? Do the turbo's need to be fully stripped every 80k?

 

 

I've heard that on the manual the clutch will be lucky to last much more than 25k, is this true and how much does a new one cost?

Does the 300ZX co0me with a drivers airbag as std or does it start from a certain date?

I think airbags came standard in 1994, but you will need £7000 ish for a good 1994 ZX.

 

I think they where optional in 1992/1993 for the UK, and no the 300ZX does not have side impact bars.

 

My last clutch lasted over 50,000 miles, but if you are wanting to modify it to make it faster you will need a stronger clutch very soon which will set you back about £450 for a good clutch and then £150 or so to fit and you may need the flywheel skimmed which will be another £100.

 

As for the 180mph. The 300ZX will easily do it, if tuned correctly. I think the theoretical top speed for a Manual is 173-176mph at red line, but you can go faster if you go past the red line.

 

I think the Automatic top speed is slightly faster at 180 at red line. You want the Tommi Kara 300ZX. I think there where only 8 made and have a top speed of 220mph. I saw one for sale a few months ago for £20,000 H reg.

 

Was you quote for a 1989+ 300ZX, because the pre 1989 300ZX is a lot cheaper to insure as it wasnt as fast. Also your quote is for a UK 300ZX, try a quote for a Japanese 300ZX Import because it will be a lot more, and we dont want you buying an import only for you not to realise the insurance is more.

I for got the real name, but its "Tommi" then Kara or some thing like Kara.

 

He is a Japanese tuner who make big money out of tuning stuff like that. The only pic I have seen of one, was on his site (Forgot the address now) and sorry to disapoint it looked very stock. :(

My advice is go for a genuine car. whether UK or import.

 

Mine is one of the first ones (1989) which some folk say to stay away from.

 

But I got it with only one owner since new imported (got all the original jap MOTs from new).

 

Look for all the genuine stuff that a loved well cared for car should still have (t-top bags, flare in passenger compartment, full complement of tools (jack, chucks, etc), t-top covers, t-top light shades. owners manual (mine is in japanese, but it still shows it's well cared for).

 

I've had mine for 5 years now. It has not done about 80K (100K on clock, but it was 50K km when I got it, so works out at 80K miles).

 

If the previous owner hasn't had it a while, I'd walk away, there are sh*t loads of crappy cars out there that will look good to someone who doesn't know that to look 4.

 

For example, if you are not used to 300hp, a 300zx in safety boost will still seem quick.

 

All cars should have had the cambelt changed (5years or 60K), so if no proof it's been done, budget in 500 quid.

 

Look for evidence of 'monging'.. any wires under bonnet, has it got some aftermarket shite all over it.. etc.

 

There are plenty out there to wait for a good un.

 

Personally I'd advice folk to only buy from someone on here. I have met 300zx owners who are not on this forum.. I imagine they are the majority, and they now mostly seem to consist of Neds/wideboy/f*ckwits who don't have the knowledge to look after them. You don't want to end up with a dog.
