Heya everyone! Im new here, had my z less than a mnth and love it, btw its the yellow one on paul baileys site (under 'front section l' & 'rear wing l') if anyone wants to look, i was amazed to see it there!

Anyway back to the point, when accelerating hard it changes to 2nd gear at 48mph then 3rd at 80mph then still pulling hard in 3rd i click the overdrive button ON and the revs pick up slightly and it pulls even quicker! Are your z's the same? Does it accelerate slightly quicker with o/d on all the time?

Also, it wont kick down to 1st if im doing over 24mph is that normal and can i adjust to get 1st at say 30mph?

Replies welcome pleasey weasey!

Dunno m8, got a manual so I can choose what speeds I change gear!!!:D :D :D ;)

The revs will rise a little when you put it into o/drive if you are still hard on the accelerator, I would advise easing off for a split second when putting the o/drive on (bit like a manual change) as i think it tends to do this as you are putting too much stress on the box. You will notice that if you select o/drive when not on the accelerator the change will be much smoother, and your zed will thank you for it.

Ive only recently learnt that there are ways to be kind to your autobox (such as easing off the throttle during changes, and apparently 2nd to 3rd clutch is very weak).

About first, at not over 24mph, cant say as i blame it, the zed should have plenty of power in second at that speed.

i only really use my overdrive for motorway use, and when in town turn it off, it saves all the gear changes, i just stab the pedel to the the floor and the power light comes on for 10secs and it switches the aircon off for more powerrrrrrrrrrr.

Yes, that is what it is like for an auto driver who has no idea what it is like to DRIVE the car by yourself, choosing the right gear ratio and revs, balancing the power against the oversteer, not having to wait for dropdown when you want to go faster.........

You stick to point and shoot, mate - there's a whole world out there trying to make life easier for you- enjoy!

:D

Sorry, you probably don't understand terms like oversteer (?)

being an auto driver??

Cause you can't just slip the clutch, build up the revs, induce a few revs, drop the clutch, slip the back out, power on and blast down the road sideways,

never mind,

still, yours is much better when you're sat in traffic and don't have to worry about your leg getting tired on the competition spec clutch!

Groan...Not another Auto Vs manual thread...

Everyone knows Auto is best! ;)

lol i didnt mean to start arguments!

Personally i luv manuals but i luv autos too, learning to change gear with ya foot instead of ya hand; or lock it in 2nd and hav all the oversteer u want, and u still get good engine breaking when approachin roundabouts at 100 just clickin out of o/d.

Nobody answered the kickdown question, can any of you still kickdown to 1st at 30mph? The only way i can is by pullin the stick back to 1st and floorin it, its much quicker than 2nd at that speed, i dont do it much tho just when i need to lose an imprezza or summat!

2 simple questions

My overdirve light is not on so does that mean its on? or off

I never really turn it off or on

When the light is on then that means overdrive is off? and it revs higher? ( i thought this was just for round town)

i dont think it revs any higher, just doesnt change up to 4th so car is more drivable, u get more engine breaking and it doesnt have to change down cos your in a lower gear, with overdrive on mine seems to change up to second about 30 then if i ease of in 2nd it will change up two gears quite quickly so u can tootle along at 40 in top gear thus saving gas, if u do deside to floor it it changes down and the power light comes on (jap only) and u can take it all the way round to 7200 thru all the gears :D

I don't think mine will kickdown into 1st at 30mph, must be getting close to that, say mid 20's but wouldn't say 30. I'm gonna check tomorrow now and I'll let you know. Feels good though eh?

And totally agree with your other comments! :D I can change from 1st to 2nd by just dropping off the gas at the exact right time and planting it again.......it must sound like the quickest manual change ever! (got bovs)

Manuals OR auto's..............who cares?! The Z is a fantastic car in both forms.

So the rule is

overdrive on (light off) for motor way driving to save fuel

overdrive off (light on) for round town and for booting it?

Heya james , did u check your kickdown speed to get 1st?

Hiya mate.

Well, checked this out last night and today and it won't drop back into 1st at any more than mid 20's mph max.

Thx James, that means mine must be set right as its about the same, wonder if its adjustable lol?

There's a train bridge just around the corner to me and its quite a wide one so there's quite an echo underneath it. There are traffic lights about 50 yards away.......by the time I get to go under the bridge I make sure I'm at about 20 mph and stomp the loud pedal down, it drops into first and aahhh its like music to my ears......(full stainless, cats out and only 1 small back box) just before I come back out I let off and get a 2nd chorus coming from my HKS BOV's.........its sounds so nice I'm going to video it one day! :D :D

What do BOV's sound like in an auto when changing gear? Do u get to hear them?

If you leave your foot firmly buried in the carpet, then no, you won't hear them between gear changes. Between 1st and 2nd that isn't how I change gear anyway. So I guess its my choice whether I want to hear them or not. I can lock it in 2nd and as the gearing is that much taller than a manual, I hardly get into 3rd if I'm booting it - as 2nd gear sees me to nearly 90 mph!

....I can't disagree that bov's were meant for a manual though!

No because you don't need to ease off the throttle like a manual,to hear the Whoosh, just lift of the gas;)
