Hi all.

My Zed - 1990 ZX TT Targa auto Jap spec has a problem when idling. When in Park, and left to idle, after a while the passenger side exhaust blows out blue smoke. When driving normally or using the kickdown or going fast there is no blue smoke and everything is fine.

Does anyone have a clue what this could mean? are the turbos going or piston rings or is it simple?

Thanks

Regards Ian

Your oil seal in your turbo is probaly leaking on you passenger side.

Or it could be the head on the passenger side. Do a compression test.

Hi

Thanks.

Are either of these very expensive to put right or is it a case of now selling it to avoid a wallet thumping expence this year?

Thanks

Ian

Could it not be the PCV valves? There seems to be the opinion (andyduff) that when these get blocked, they cause blue smoke after idling. Perhaps failed on one side?

Cheers - Gio

Ian I've got exactly the same problem only it doesnt always come out of the same side!!

I'm going along the same route that Gio mentioned...taking Andy Duffs advice and changing the PCV's first!!

Fingers well and truly crossed, that will be the problem!!;)

Cheers,

F.T.

Thanks all.

I shall try the PCV first and then panic. Anyone know where i can get these fitted or is it a job i can do myself. I am hopeless at car mechanics, repacing spark lpugs is all i can do?

Regards

Ian (fingers crossed).

Have a search through the sites under the links on top of the page.

One of the sites has a guide on how to do it, unfortunately I can't remember which one ( sign of my age!!):D

Cheers,

F.T.

we just had a group buy on PCV valves and the hoses, I don't think they are to difficult to fit,

http://www.ttzd.com/tech/pcvtech.html

that guide shows you how, I have smoke out of both banks on idle, im hoping that it goes with this fix, its not obscene ammounts, just a little at idle,

I reckon it could have been caused when i switched to optimax and that started cleaning crap out of my engine and it blocked up some of the hoses and valves?? anyone think this is likely?

im willing to bet its turbos for everyone above, and not pcv jobbies.

(so ill keep this up when the PCV thing dont work :D)

if your car is ideling and starts blue smoke its turbos without doubt, and its the same on all cars even one without PCV valves.

If your car is smoking get turbos checked out, far to often youll go about it every other way possible not to want it to be the blowers. Been there done that lol and it cost me a fortune.

my smoke just doesnt follow the pattern though of what turbo smoke should, ill see when PCV valves go in, otherwise may get some uprated tubs fitted :)

Hi

I only get blue smoke from the passenger side exhaust when it is idling. when it starts up there is no blue smoke at all.

PCV or Turbo?

Warren, let's say for arguments sake that you're right for once! :p :D

What would you recommend as far as replacement turbos go? Smithy's hybrids? Standard reconditioned jobs? A £5k ball-bearing set? Sport 500s? Any others?

I know I could do a search, but the main aim of the post was to get the abuse in! :D

LOL, if the smoke does it on a set patern its turbos.

and since i have the most experience of anyone in the 300zx world when it comes to mechanical failure lmfao :D ill let that slip he he.

Its all budget dependant and where you want to end up at.

i would say Sport 535 bb turbos or GT25BB turbos are a very good bet.

Where do yuo stop though? i mean i would love a set of Mitsubishi TD05-20G blowers, but then other things will satrt to break lol (brake discs :D clutches, gearboxes, and everything elses :D)

But seriously these cars with a good solid 400+ on the wheels are awesome to drive. To much becomes scary and pointless.

Hehe Warren - I know you'd love to be an optimist but you doubt you ever will be :p

I say its worth replacing the breathers for the price - I'd far rather try a £50 fix than having the engine pulled for a set of new turbos. It is true though, most of the time its breather trouble NOT turbo failure.....

CheerZ,

Andy

If we have to go this route Warren....do you have any contacts to get them for a good price?

Cheers,

F.T.
