MAx Wattage of H3 bulbs in Projector (Low Beam)

Hello there,

My first post here on the UK boards, I am a TTnet regular and a Z fanatic...

Anyhoo, I am converting my lighting system to accept H3 bulbs, and was wondering what the maximum wattage of bulb I could Use. Anyone have ideas as to what kind of thermal abuse the housings can take?

Also, NE1 here able to get German Spec OEm Nissan parts? Please email me if so, I have a few questions for you...

Great board you guys got here :)

In the UK legally only allowed 55watt and I think that is the most it can take. I have tried 100watt but they blew after a few weeks, I tried 133watt with the same result. The bulbs get too hot in the head unit causing them to blow. Some people have drilled small holes in the lighting housing to allow the heat to escape with mixed results.

Why you want German OEM parts? Wont all the Euro parts be the same?

P.S. I forgot to say Welcome.

Well, Since the 9006 bulbs in the US are crap in general, I was hoping to use H3 bulbsin the low beam position, and I wasnt aware that ALL Euro Z's used H3s, I thought only German Spec's did.... DO they all?

UK ones use H3 bulbs.

The light is not bad, but when I put 133watt bulbs in the light was fantastic, but they blew. Some cooling and maybe a better earth will help them last longer.

I have seen a tech on how to conver Jap lights to accept H3 bulbs. May work for US.

Some people put foil on the inside of the light housing, which some say makes the lighting a lot better.

I dont mean to be sarky.

but if the 100watt bulbs blew, why did you try 133watt bulbs?

And welcome Bob :D

Germany had a few bits and bobs that were different spec to UK, bulbs being one of them, i use PIAA 85 watt which are supposed to produce 135 watt lighting power but drawing only 85, if yer know what i mean ;) anyways no probs for past 10 months, did have 100 watt bulbs in and 1 blew after about a year, other still fine.

Cheers

smithy

Oh don't ever use a UK spec rad, yours is far better Nismo spec in Germany:(

ANy of you lads have pics of your headlight housings and bulb sockets???

Cos I put 100watt bulbs in and thought better but I could get it even better. So I then changed to 133watt. 3 weeks later they blew and I put the 100watt bulbs back in. Few weeks later they went. See there was a logic behind my reasoning. :D

Well, here's what I've done.

As I have the silver vinyl upgrade, my lights are better than stock, regardless of what bulbs I use.

However, I used 55W Laser Blue bulbs and they were almost as good as 100W normal bulbs. However, with the 100W bulbs, heat is a big issue, so I have tried is leaving the rubber and plastic covers off the back of the lights to allow the heat to dispurse. So far, so good. That's the only way I can think of getting any extra airflow in there.

One thing I don't understand is why my drivers side bulbs and gone twice in the last 3 months, and the passenger side bulb has not gone at all. Maybe the wiring is more of an issue than first realized.

Hope that helps.
