Problem is that i've been offered a unregistered 300zx jap import that been partley stripped(engine brakes diff some interior and I had the auto box for my car) and the guy who's car it is said I could have the rolling shell for next to nothing

So my question is has anyone plonked a chevy small block in one and what problems did they experiance along the way

I don't have a clue to be honest and im sure u'll get proper answers from some of the masterminds on here but all i know is the Z's engine is a quite a compact v6.

I'd imagine u'd have great difficulty shoe horning a v8 in there.

What for ?

you can get the power you would need using the current setup? why go to the bother of changeing all the aspects ie weight distribution - ect?

Pointless/

V8 = :D

would be an interesting project. From what ive seen though, the american V8's have pretty poor power output, so not quite sure how it would perform, would sound sweet though

sounds like an interesting project............;)

i have seen one with a skyline engine in....it was used for drag racing........if you do it you get my respect;)

why not do something interesting and something that will put a lot of people backs up, what about a seriously tuned mr2 turbo engine, toms supra uses one.

probably just as must power as a highly tooned zed block but it certainly would be a car that would get tongues wagging at meets and there is a high level of mr2 knowledge in the UK

Why are people want to put another engine into a different car. To me the engine along with the ride made the ZX. Its the smooth V6 TwinTurbo which produces over 100bhp per litre and can easily be modified to over 400bhp with no problems.

Why put an American engine in? It will be heavier, and not as powerful unless you turbo it.

Not saying dont do it, its very hard work and it must be nice to have a completely differnt car to every one else. After the cost of the engine, parts and having some one completely redesign your engine bay, you could have bought the whole of the V8 car so why bother?

Stuart

thats cos the mr2t uses the same engine as the celica gt4, may be worth noting all of the development work was done for the celica rally car, and nothing to do with the mr2 ;)

Thanks for the input guys my reasoning behind putting in a V8 is so I could junk a lot of the electronics and turbo related parts and Hicas thus saving a lot of weight.

I.ve been led to believe that a alloy V8 is probably lighter than the cast iron block Z32 motor

I understand that you can get fantastic H/power from a Z's engine but a lazy V8 you could spank all day every day without it throughing a tantrum

Anyone got any Idea's what sort of difficulties I could come across when its time to regiser the car

Cheers

or the gt4 uses the same as tje mr2t ;)

**** it, why do anything? its because you can, thats the whole point of doing anything

Yes it has been done and here,s the pic to prove it:cool:

and another

I have seen on moddedcars.com or something like that a v8 300zx on nos that is qucik as hell! ask the bloke on there!

Is this because they have only 2 valves/cylinder ?

Buy a Chevy Corvette - lovely cars. Saw a silver convertible at the weekend - luuurvely - wud swap me Z for one if living in the UK (expensive parts etc.) and petrol prices weren't a consideration.

They tend to have colossal torque, but the BHP is not that high. Friend of mine had a 5.0l Mustang (one of the ones that looked a bit like a Ford Escort) and it was only 150BHP.

sp whats' the difference between torque and BHP ?? I know torque is rotational energy, but surely this is related to BHP ?

Yeah, a mate of mine's got a Trannsam 6.6l and that only puts out 180 bhp:eek:

Wrong. I work with lubricants.

(Torque x Engine speed) / 5,252 = Horsepower

surely the above equation means that a high torque = a high horsepower ??

 How can one be high and the other low, sibnce the only other variable is engine speed and most road cars rev to similar levels ??

the problem is yanky v8's DONT rev very high. cruddy pushrod engines you see. :)

You guys seem to be forgetting that the yanks build the best engines for dragsters, and 350hp from a 350 cubic inch Chevy V8 is easy, and CHEAP, and will go on and on and on.

Also the late sixties muscle cars were doing less than 6 seconds to 60, fresh out of the factory.

A nicly tuned 350ci Chevy, making close to 400hp and bags of torque in a z would make a nice car.

Dont be fooled into thinking all yank V8s are crude, try looking at the Northstar V8, from a caddy I think.

Very interesting the response I have got from my original idea.

Thought I do a lot more reserch into power and difficulties the boys over in the states have encountered.

With the ref to power the small block chevy pushes out, true that in some cases bhp is quite low but in the likes of the covette LT1 engine it produces 440 bhp (reving out about 7 thou), out of the box and 750bhp( reving out at 9 thou), is obtainable and reliable and the torque is unbelievable.

The custom performance parts industry for the chevy engine is out of this world and at prices that are hard to believe eg set of pistons £120

Difficulties in fitting a V8. have a look at http://www.HybridZ.org and look at engine swops. and see what you think, and please let me know.

I'm glad this has stirred up quite a bit of interest and will let you know how i'm getting on when I get the rolling shell home.

Just need to sell my 240z to give me some space.

Cheers Stevie
