It seems doing the o2 diagnostic, my left o2 sensor is pretty much stuck with the light on (one write up claims that's rich, the other says lean). Could this be part of the cause of problems revving over 5500rpm?

Is it ok to disconnect it/them to see if it makes any difference or is this likely to cause problems?

Yes you car run the car with them disconnected;) will run a little rich though.

Bugger, tried disconnecting them an it made no real difference.

Thanks tho.

How much difference do you expect it to make ? The car won't run perfectly with either a dead O2 sensor or them disconnected.

Resetting the ECU after disconnection may make more difference, but you really want to get the dead'un replaced ASAP.

Yea i'm still gunna replace it asap just im getting so desperate now that the fact the light wasnt flashing got me all excited!

BEst to get a conZult on it mate. A dead O2 sensor would normally read in at 1.54 volts. Where they should fluctuate between .25 and .6 at idle.

O2 sensors are not used when the car is cold, and ususally cause very slight gerking around the 2 - 3k rpm mark (most common sign).

If you disconnect your O2 sensor the ECU will give it a default reading of 0.33 which is better than running lean or rich but still not as good as a working O2 sensor :D.

I need the left (passenger side) o2 sensor, from courtesy, is it simply a case of selecting the driver side sensor or is there something else to consider?

No just order that one - the only difference with the two is lead length but I'm sure each will fit on either side.

The O2's aren't used above (I think) 3000rpm anyway so no way can they be affecting your car at those revs...
