Hi all,

I'm currently trying to get as much info as possible on the 300zx TT as i'm very interested in buying one at the end of the year, yes i know its only May but i like to be sure about these things! :)

I've just read the very interesting and informative buyers guide in the FAQ's, which has almost answered all my questions but a still have a few queries.

How much (realistic) MPG should i expect to get around town and cruising the motorway?

Can anyone recommend any companys for importing a TT 300zx?

and finally how much am i likely to pay for insurance, i will be 23 and have 1 years NCB and 3 points.

Thanks in advance for any advice, sorry about the long post.

16MPG around town really is what i get,

not sure on imported,

insurance for a UK spec for 21 with 1year NCB and clean liscense is £1200 it will be more for an import though.

Thanks for that mate, insurance is better than i thought!

I forgot to ask what is better for reliability an auto or manual gearbox??

I'm not to bothered about losing a bit of performance with an autobox as it will be my first turbo car so it will feel fappin quick anyway! :D

What would you guys recommend??

Thanks again

23, only 1 years no claims and 3 points and your looking at an import??

1st bit of advice, if you can afford the insurance for a Z make sure it's a UK car and it should be cheaper (maybe??) not completely sure about this as you have to be over 25 for classic policies and most places don't want insure imports with drivers under 25......unless you want to pay through the nose.......

2nd bit of advice, build up your no claims for a few years then buy a Z, I'm not trying to put you off but you have to be realistic. Don't forget you have petrol costs (optimax if you can!) servicing every 3,000 to 4,000 miles, brake pads and dics, tyres etc.. repairs i.e. would you have the money spare to pay for an engine rebuild, turbo replacement, new autobox, new clutch, those kind of problems? even the small problems on the Z's can be expensive plus you have all the niggly problems that come with a Z and on top of that you have general running costs.

3rd bit of advice, what is your maximum budget for a Z? If it's about 7k then I would not spend all of that on a Z, save a couple of grand for problems and buy a slightly cheaper Z (even if you buy a Z for 7k you will still have a problem of one sort of another!)

4th bit of advice, if you get past all these and still think I'm being a muppet (:p ) then the best advice I can give is, don't jump into the first one you see and take your time and buy a good one!! There are plenty of people on here that would take an hour out of the day to go and look at a Z with you (if they are in your area of course!) extensive reaserch is the key.

So here's the checklist;

1. Buy Z £6,500 for a good one

2. Insurance, possibly £1,500 to £2,000 maybe more, I know of people older that do pay more!

3. general wear and tear costs, tyres £500 (Z rated), brakes and discs £200 (standard)

4. Servicing, £200+

5. Cross fingers you don't have a major problem (could be £2,000 turbo replacement!)

6. £20 to Craig for full membership of the forum.

Just make sure you have enough to cover all the above, 3 and 4 are regular and 5 is what you should have in the bank for an emergency!!

Oh and one more bit of advise, don't put it all on credit cards, you have to pay them back and that usually means selling the Z to do it, all that at a lot less than you paid.

Just be careful.

Matty.

its about time you got one yourself matty......;)

I know mate, I can't live without one, biggest mistake I ever made selling my one to Keith S..............:( :(

I wish someone would buy my Rover Coupe................

Too many trye kickers and people who can't stump up the cash!

I just don't have the room for both the Rover and a new Z on the drive, I have seen quite a few recently that I could go and get but the Rover is blocking the way and I could use the £3,500 it's up for!! :D

Someone find me someone that wants to buy a Rover Coupe!! ;)

Matty.

Matty, thanks for the info.

I've got an insurance quote with tesco online as a rough idea, they quoted me £1600 with a CAT1 Cobra alarm and immobiliser which is'nt too bad for a supercar?!?, this is only a rough guide i'm sure i can get it cheaper :D

I'm looking to spend £8k on a car at the end of they year so buying a zed may not be a definate as i'm quite tempted by some other of japans finest, But thanks again mate i'll bear what you said in mind.

£8k for a Z should get you a very nice one. As said a UK one is significently cheaper to insure than a Jap one.

I am a little like you, I am 23, but have 5 years NCB and 0 Points! ;) I've had my Z since I was 21  and I have been skint ever since.

How you get you points? Speeding? WATCH YOUR LICENCE ;) LOL.

You can do 100mph in this and its so smooth and the engine is not even trying you dont notice your speed.

I am currently looking for insurance at the moment, and tried to get a classic policy, but every one has said I have to be 25, except Firebond who quoted me £850 fully comp on a UK Z, with Mods, which are Induction and Exhaust. Tesco and other places add £200 or so for those small mods, :(. The closest quote I have been given is £800 but that is Third Part Fire Theift.

If I was you, and you have the parking space. Spend £6000 on a good Z and then spend the rest on another run-a-round. I now have a Corsa 1.2 which is used for the general running round, to and from the pub, work, girlfrieds, friends. The short trips put miles on very quickly and make your MPG go down to 10ish if you just pootle. I used to spend £200 ish a month on fuel and I dont really go anywhere. Its now come down to £70-£100 at the most because the Corsa gets 30mpg round town and 43 on the motorway. Lot better than the 15ish and 24ish.

If you phone Firebond and get classic, you will be restricted to 6000 miles a year, but your NCB will be free to use on your 2nd car. You need a 2nd car to get classic.

If there are any other questions you want me to answer, let me know.

Stuart

For insurance, i don't know if you have tried Herts Insurance Consultants 08451 290290 , i'm currently with them now and they quoted me over £1000 less than Adrian flux and Firebond for my modded Fiat Seicento (please don't laugh! ;) LOL)

So hopefully they'll be able to quote me a decent price.

Just a quick question do all UK spec Zed's have electric leather seats??

Thanks again guys

No, they don't.

Series 1 UK Zeds are cloth / tweed interior

Series 2 UK Zeds (1992+) had the option of leather seats with the alacantara finish.

Hope you find a good one.

Anita.

Leather must have been an option on earlier UK models as well. Mine is a UK 90TT and has leather.

Rgds

Jon

 :D

Might have been an option all the time, then. I know that when I was looking around to buy my one about 5 years ago, the only ones with leather seemed to be the 1992+ ones. :)
