Has anyone used one?

I am doing a distance of 1300 miles during June(UK to Greece), with mine and another two cars(a supe TT and a Celica GT4) and i was wondering if they will be ok for communication between the 3 cars. Is there another cheaper solution than that?

I used some expensive walkie talkie things before but the interference from the car electronics was so big, that i couldn't here my mate that was in car about 20 feet away from me. Maybe it was the certain handset's fault.

Any suggestions?

CB sound fine. I know it not stictly legal in the UK but if you can get ones with higher band frequencies it will help filter out the crap!

I found this model, it gets very good reviews and i also found some articles on how to unlock it in order to get a wider band of frequencies. The price also seems really good compares to the PMR thingies.

Maycom EM-27

compared not compares....

A few cb mobiles would be fine. with the standard power you could achieve a range of a mile with a decent antenna. If you don't have any equipment already check on ebay, a quick search should bring a few units up.

Used to use them a lot years ago and never really suffered any interference problem.

Jon.

I already checked and most of the units are tatty, plus they usually cost 50-60 quid. So, i think it's better to get this brand new Maycom with 80 quid, right?

sounds good - make sure the 3 units you do buy are using the same frequency. An old AM and a 27mhz FM wont "hear" each other.

Thanks Jon.

Most probably i'll manage to convince the other two to get the same model. Do the various exterior antennas have big differences between them? I want something modest. :)

CB. radio has been used in the UK since the mid 70's

It came in from the States on AM totaly illegal and soon became huge, to the point that the then government thought there was some cash to be made by licencing it. So was but only on FM. There was a rush to get the first sets, but within 2years it hade died out. You can still find moddles for sale both new and second hand (loot is a good place) I once had a set that was good for 60 miles in open country but in town it went down to 5 or 6. A mobile set will require an external antenna, usually magnetic this will give a good clear signal.

You will have to learn a new language though!

So have fun, Keep your shiny side up and your greasy side down, dont go without a foxy lady as your seat cover, and I'll catch you on the flip side, And that's a big 10-4 good buddy!!

Different antenna's do perform differently, but to be honest I wouldn't worry too much about it. There must still be shops out there that specialise in CB stuff. A basic antenna with magmount used to cost approx £15.

If the three of you plan to drive down in convoy rather than splitting up then you will be able to get away with a basic one no worries.

Having said that, if you do go for a magmount rather than boot or some other alternative go for the strongest one that you can. Nothing pi$$e$ you off quicker than a mag mount coming off the roof and hitting the rear body somewhere. I once ended up with a huge dint in the back quater panel of my new "A reg" xr3i. Anyway showing my age now..

Cheers

Jon.

It's definately going to be a convoy. :D

So how many candles are you burning ? Whats your 20 and your handle ? Up for an eyeball ? You're coming through 30+ clear and green.

Arh the memories......

I'll then go for the boot mounted then. :)

Is there a book to learn the language ?!?!?! :D

Hmmm there are obviously people out there with way too much free time. Myself included (should be decorating) !!

Anyway, here's a web page so that you to can sound as sad as we did back in the late 70's / early 80's....

Thanks once again Jon :)

Jon.. are we really that old and was it that long ago.

So tell me were you AM or FM.

Handle (little Willie)

First rig was an am one imported from the states, think it cost over £300 from memory. Parents flipped a bit when they heard all the stories on the news of it interfering with emergency services etc then had to go "legal" with a £10 license from the local post office and a midland FM rig.

I remember the time where if someone lived more than a mile away you couldn't get hold of them because there were that many people on it.

Arh well, seems so long ago now. Mind you I was one of the many school kids with a cb, only 11 in 1980 when I got the am "rig".

Sad thing it, I've still got a small midland mobile rig and an old mag mount along with 150watt burner (not quite legal) in the garage. Bet there would be no one on if I fired it up now.
