Speakers

As i've blown up all the speakers in my Zed, i need some advice on new ones!!

What sizes are they?

I was thinking of getting some Hi-Fi speaker cones (brother works at Audio T, massive discounts!) and setting up some serious sounds!!

I have a 200W 12" JL Audio Sub and a Kenwood AMP KAC-848 so i can set the cross-overs up ok.

Hifi speakers will tend to be 6 or 8 ohms, so you won't get much power transfer from your car amp (which will be expecting a nominal 4 ohm load, or 2 or 1 ohm bridged).

they will also tend not to have the characteristics for good sound in a car.

you need powerful small magnets for car speakers with a lot of travel to push the air about as the have zero or very small enclosures, whereas hifi speakers tend to have large enclosures, smaller magnets, more sensitive coils, etc.

the 2 really ain't compatible with each other.

you can get a good set of 6x9s into the front doors with only a little work and it'll sound pretty good. Like anything else, there are folk who arn't happy with less than component speakers everywhere.

I've got infinity 6x9s powered by a 70W rms per channel alpine amp and it sounds pretty good (200W RMS alpine amp powering a 10" 1000W alpine sub in boot, and I put some little filler speakers into the rear where the shitey bose stuff was that get powered by the head unit for the unfortunates that ever sit in the back.

I just love to disagree with people, in a nice friendly way,

I have Monitor Audio home speakers in the back of mine, and it rocks. No problems witrh ohmes (?) etc.

well, I take it they are in their enclosures, which explains that bit.

the unmatched impedence just means that you won't be transferring as much power into them as your amp could with 4 ohm speakers. But with a big enough amp, it can clearly still be enough.

I'm sure if I mounted my floor standing missions in my boot it might sound good too, but a bit impractical :-) But if I took the speakers out their enclosures and screwed them into the doors, they'd sound like sh*t.

I'm not sure about sound quality but from an electronics point of view if you put 2 of your 8 ohm impedence speakers in parallel you'll get a 4 ohm impedence. If you don't know what the difference between a circuit in series and a circuit in parallel is have a look here:-

Some crappy site that explains electronics

OK Powerlord, I can accept what you say about taking the drivers out of their boxes, mine are still in their box, they are fairly small, about 12" high, I have them lying on their side in the boot.

I am not running a big amp, just 40wpc, from a JVC head unit.

It might be impracticle, but I dont use the car for anythin other than fun so boot space is not an issue.

I did think of trying my Mission 704a's , but couldnt be bothered running 240volts to the car to run the active bass drivers.

My setup suits me, and it was easy, sounds good etc. Oh and I have 6x9 Alpines in the front doors.

:-)

Just had a pair of Diamond 6x9s fitted into the doors, powered by the latest Alpine head unit (4x60w). This sounds pretty damn good, but doesn't go as low as subs would. I'm now planning to fit another pair of the same diamonds into the rear, which isn't going to be straightforward, but will be a huge improvement over the tiny Nissan 6x4s that are completely blowin in my car too!

When finished I'll have 240w of full range musical audio (as opposed to loud bass booming!) and all my boot space left intact.
