headlamp failure

My headlamps, sidelights, foglights and rear lights have all suddenly stopped working!!! I checked the fuses in the relay box and they are all intact, the relays are still clicking when I turn the light switch on and off, is there anything else I can check? I have looked at what I think is the fusible connection box at the rear right hand side of the engine bay and these also appear OK.

I put a voltmeter across the terminals of the headlamp fuse sockets in the relay box but could not get a reading with the lights switched on. Is there a common fuse somewhere that I have overlooked? I have checked the online manual mentioned in these forums but have not had much luck. Please help.

There are also fuses inside the car - a little access panel to the right of the drivers accelerator pedal - check them out.

I don't think that fuse box contains any fuses for the lights, I will check it anyway to be on the safe side. It seems no power is getting to the fuses in the relay box, yet the relays are powered. does anyone know what could be causing this? I believe the relays are on 2 different circuits, one in common with the light switch, the other common to the lamps themselves, the power failure is on the lamp circuit only and affects both the left and right hand side circuits. I guess i need to know if there is a common point of failure to the lamp circuits before they are split into left and right hand side.

Anyone familiar with the headlamp circuits/wiring?

I had a similar problem some 5 or 6 years ago, from memory, all the lights are switches earth (think its something to do with safety / less likely to create sparks - dunno myself). Anyway, my problem turned out to be an earthing problem around the steering column.

I know its a bit vague, but I've drunk a lot of beer since then.

Hope this helps.
